Modelling suggests that Earth's first crust, which fractionated from a magma ocean, would have had a similar trace element composition to modern continental crust: in other words, this signature is not a reliable marker of subduction and plate tectonics on the young Earth.

Last year an interesting paper linked kimberlite eruptions (weird, often diamond-bearing magmas formed by deep melting of continental lithosphere) to thermal instabilities triggered by continental rifting propagating along the base of the plate to the continental interiors, triggering melting as it goes. New study suggests that most of the kimberlites over the past billion years erupted 20-30 million years after continental rifting events. Proposed mechanism is pretty cool! My name is Chris Rowan.

I am an Earth Scientist in the process of transitioning out of 10 years as a university professor and 20 years as a researcher. Still trying to work out what comes next, but whatever that is I will continue to think and talk about plate tectonics, earthquakes, and other cool geo-things.
