Getting diamonds to Earth's surface from the depths where they form requires weird deep melting that forms kimberlites. New study suggests that most of the kimberlites over the past billion years erupted 20-30 million years after continental rifting events.
Proposed mechanism is pretty cool! Steepening of base of lithosphere during rifting creates a convective instability that propagates beneath the older cratonic keels and disrupts them, triggering melting.
