#repairable

My #Logitech MX vertical #mouse has a failing microswitch under the left click button. This is a mouse which has a millions of clicks rating & there’s no way I am close to the durability limit. I also treat this mouse well & keep it clean & away from spill risks etc. Going to be contacting Logitech & demanding a replacement. It’s the switches that go bad because they’re not spec’d correctly. Not very #repairable in my situation, sadly.

@gettie Obviously it's a more *"#normie - friendly"* option compared to that, and for those that want to have an all-encompassing solution that is portable and doesn't require an external powerbank & screen like the #Pi500 this is the way to go.

Still, neither price nor feature make it appealing to me.

  • But I can see the merit of it anyway in like an electronics lab where someone just wants to have some portable raspberry pi they can just plonk it's GPIOs into a project...
Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)Attached: 1 image The #ArgonOneUP really [looks like](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NAFH_c2h7s) those *"chinese" #MacBook Air clones* And due to it's design and thinn-ness doesn't even accomondate a proper #heatpipe and (optional) #fan to keep it cool longterm...

@bazzargh I wonder if Ortlieb is committed to quality and long lasting products manufacturing in a level where they'd have a network of skilled repair shops? Or if the product is designed to be repairable.

Some shoe manufacturers do that AFAIK, at least Meindl does.

I don't think any of my Ortlieb products have broken, ever, though.

#PSA Please when designing new tech consider that not everyone has a reliable 24/7 broadband internet connection, or a large screen, or a keyboard, or a mouse, or is able to get a domain name, or is able to run services from home, is able to power their home-server for the whole day, or can rent a VPS, or can have their ip-addresses be linked to an identity, or has one legal identity, or has one name, or has a recent computer, or has easy access to a debit or credit card, or has a bank account with either, or has a PayPal account, or has bitcoin, or one of many other things some and often many people just don't have, etc…

@ArpadLinks @greenpeace I think the latter ideas won't be implementable legally, but whyt you mean with the former already exists with many #AllInOnePCs, #ThinClients and #EmbeddedComputer|s:

  • Low power, space-efficient computers that barely sip energy whilst being fully useable as Desktops.

Besides #surplus'd Hardware and frightingly-expensive for their computational power #Embedded systems there's @frameworkcomputer which sell you their #mainboards, #CoolerMaster sells a matching low-profile #case which allegedly has #VESA-Mounts, so you can easily screw that on the rear of a monitor and have a cheap #AiO #Desktop that is also #repairable.

  • I hope that comes close to what you're looking for.

@felyashono You don't need to make devices #thicc|er or heavier just by making them #repairable.

  • #Sony's Vaio #P11Z did have a toolfree-removeable battery yet it was less than 15mm thick and weighted ~560g with the standard battery and even <750g with an obscenely thicc aftermarket battery.

  • #Fairphone's devices are just as #thinn as any other #smartphone, yet they offer toolfree replaceable batteries!

  • #rectangular / #prismatic cells exist. Just because you rarely see them compared to 14500/18650/21700 cylinders but that doesn't mean they ain't available.

  • if #Framework didn't decide to go with a *"pan"-style design, they could've made their flat #battery toolfree-swappable just as the Aforementioned VAIO.

There are other ways to make a device thinner and lighter, ranging from Magnesium to fiber reinforced plastic to carbon fiber. Some #ThinkPad|s did all 3.

  • Not to mention sticking batteries in makes replacements unnecessary dangerous and can yield users to not replace "#DangerPillow|s" until they crack the housong or most likely the screen.

Also most of the gains in terms of battery runtime are attributeabke to better battery chemistry, higher grade cells by modern standards and lower power consumption by smaller process nodes (65nm @ 1,5V -> 7nm @ 0,85V can basically reduce power by 90% without any tricks!) and more powerful chips that more dynamically switch to low power states transparently. (Which is why you often get 4 different TDP ratings on some chips, with nominal, maximum & minimum configureable maximums and typical @ nominal settings)…

#AntiRepairDesign is a choice by the manufacturer. #IP68, #ATEX & #MILSTD810 can be achieved without glueing shit together!

Pretty cool. My current Oral B electric toothbrush has a broken battery cap, and luckily I found a replacement design on Thingiverse instead of needing to but a new toothbrush. This should be normalized.

As much as I dunk on #Fairphone for #downgrading every device since the #FP3plus, they at least live the "#SchematicsOrDie!" principle and actually deliver #Schematics, #BoardView and #ComponentList on their website in a publicly accessible #PDF...

In all seriousness tho: they ain't perfect but the best there is in terms of "you csn buy this right now in stores" kinda brand that isn't some obsure crowdfunding thingy but has an actual track record!

  • Also shoutout to #LouisRossmann for releasing an addendum on his own...

The problem is inherent in the design of non - #ToolFree #replaceable #LithiumIon and #LithiumPolymer batteries AND the fact that this #dangerous #Battery design is even legal.

This problem doesn't exist with #LiFePO4 cells and those ain't that bad either...

In fact, they won't become #DangerPillow|s nor age terribly and they hold longer on lower partial discharges...
