Sini Tuulia<p>I've joined the upper skirt sections together, and now either have to start doing maths to figure out how much of the second tier of ruffle I need... The pieces it’s made from are mostly bigger than the maximum stitch distance for the wadding.</p><p>I was planning on doing stitch-in-the-ditch to start with (my thought being that this will stabilise everything and hold it in place) and then come back and do extra quilting.</p><p>Is this the right approach? AI6YR Ben<p>Ha, the book I borrowed from the library on sewing alterations &amp; repairs (although good), apparently I have now covered all those skills involved in my various projects. (the focus of that book is on taking clothing that doesn't quite fit you and making very minor modifications by hand sewing to make them fit better, to hem them, loosen hems, fix buttons, etc.). Good beginning book, but looks like I'm beyond those basics now (whee!). SewBlue<p>Holy crap, I just mind melded with a dress maker who lived and worked 150 years ago!</p><p>I was really struggling getting the proportions of the pleats right. Just looked like hot garbage. Adding the swags made things just look worse and uneven. Nothing worked. </p><p>I took the skirt off the dress form and added the lace swag just by measurements. Every 30 inches. Put 4 equal marks (CF, CSF, CSB, CB) on the waistband, and pinned the skirt to marks, aligning the swags to the waist marks.</p><p>And then every goddamn pleat almost folded itself. Even the little weird one center side front I've been over thinking. </p><p>I mean, the pleats are still a bit of a hot mess, but a hot mess that can be tamed. </p><p>So much of period design is actually "eh, this will work."</p><p>Magic I tell you. Magic.
