I've been unsuccessful at trying to find the other #invasive European wall #lizard nests to eradicate them from our property. This one lizard that I saw this morning is medium sized, about 3" long.
#EuropeanWallLizards breed prolifically & are a threat to our native #ecosystems, disturbing #ecological balance by killing/eating several native flora & fauna - including native alligator lizards, native slugs & salamanders & news, baby turtle eggs, wild bird eggs, they destroy native bee & bumblenee nests by eating the bees/young & they also eat native plants & seeds. They have super voracious appetites & are commonly known to eat their own young too - instead of letting them grow up & compete for food & nesting areas.
They started to spread from #CentralSaanich & are now found in every municipality in #YYJ. They've now spread up island, into the Gulf Islands, over to Vancouver mainland & BC interior areas too.
Please read an older news article linked, on how their invasion of local ecosystems started:
"Long before they ever roamed #Saanich backyards, common wall lizards existed only as an exhibit at #RudysPetPark, a Central Saanich attraction opened in 1957 to capitalize on tourist traffic from nearby Butchart Gardens.
Started by German immigrant Rudy Bauersachs, the park was located along Durrance Road next to #MountWork, and boasted lions, monkeys, cougars, bears, bobcats, snakes, and, of course, a small population of common wall lizards from Northern Italy. In 1961, one of the zoo’s wolves, Lobo, even achieved brief fame as the star of an eponymous #WaltDisney film."
