Unlike honey bees #bumblebees do not produce and store large supplies of honey but rather keep small quantities of #nectar to feed on in the nest in ‘honeypots’ constructed from a mixture of secreted wax and pollen.

Honey bees on apple blossoms. Both of the Esopus Spitzenburg, or Spitz, are full bloom now and everything else is still blooming with some bee activity.

Sorry, but are those blue bees? Never seen that before! :)

Josie guarding the bee houses. Most of the blue orchard mason bees have filled up their tubes.

Georgia mason bee (Osmia georgica) in the process of chewing out of its cocoon. If you're in a quiet room you can hear them chewing. #bee #bees #insects #pollinators #macro #hymenoptera #mandibles #macrophotography
Nothing fancy, but thought y'all might like watching a little native desert bee work in its home under a rock... it's too adorable

Edit* think it's a petalcutter bee
My daughter just spotted the first bumblebee of the season! The Hunt's bumblebee was exploring her garden, next to some flowering Siberian Squill.

'while the tall grass caused a small stir among some neighbours, the results were striking: parks with meadows saw an immediate increase in pollinator species, with 21 to 47 more wild bee and hoverfly species compared to parks without meadows. The increase persisted over the three-year study period, suggesting that the meadow parks also support pollinators in the long run.'

It’s #InverteFest again! So here is my pollinator propaganda for Manufactured Ecosystems. Thinking about the future of pollination and seeking solutions from technological and nature-based knowledge. This is essentially my conclusion: we can aid our beleaguered pollinators with technology but their continued success is vital. We need to foster the insects to keep ecosystems functioning.

Excited about our new project, FLYTHRIVE, with Olombria, NRI, Asplins and Summerberry Company. Hoverflies are amazing: dual-purpose beneficial insects! They are good little #pollinators, and many species also help control aphids! The larvae of the aphid-eating #hoverflies are voracious little predators that will eat up to a few dozen aphids per day.

I’m seriously bummed by the amount of invasive plants I see posted

#NativePlants are the support base for a healthy ecosystem. They evolved with the insects, birds and other fauna that rely on them for food, shelter, and to reproduce. #InvasivePlants have been introduced, and can crowd out native plants, creating a food desert for #pollinators, #birds, etc. if you care about the loss of birds and pollinators, think about adding native plants to your garden and removing invasive species.

The Donkey Tail growing down by the marina parking lot is flowering and is covered with pollinators!! I think these are all new species for me: some kind of Halictus furrowing bee (maybe Halictus rubicundus), another that looks like it’s in Lasioglossum, and then possibly a Purple Miner Bee (Andrena prunorum)
There were definitely more out there but I’ll have to go back with the big camera to get enough detail. Just had my phone on me!
