Cormorant: "You've got to be kidding! I can't even spell Phalacrocoracidae let alone pronounce the word! Who in their right mind came up with that term as a family name? I can hear it now. Hi, I'm William Phalacrocoracidae! What's your name? the ospreys will be falling out of the trees at that one!"

Some how lucked out and got this. I got probably 60 or more images of them in flight, most didn't turn out, some did, this is the best though.
I made these my new wallpaper on my laptop and phone, I made them available on my Ko-Fi.

By popular demand (@bartlomiejnestvarno@pol.social), last Saturday short walk between two sewage plants, in a place called Poor Little Ass (Dupina. No, it's not about donkey), near a pond named Hollow (Zapadlisko). You cannot make this up ;)

Pond shore, with dry, yellowish-brown reed. Some birds: white heron standing in reed, two cormorants sitting on mid-water stumps, mallard drake.

#NewYork: Dozens of dead birds found on #LongIsland beach believed to have died from #AvianFlu

"A Long Island beachside community in #SuffolkCountyNY is worried about dozens of dead birds that have washed up on the shore and been found in backyards, especially because officials believe the birds died from avian flu.

"#PatchogueShores in #EastPatchogue has a private community beach. Earlier this week, Tim Jones, the vice president of their association, was walking along the beach with his family when he noticed many dead birds.

"'I saw three #seagulls, a #cormorant, and I got a count of 11 #ducks,' explained Jones.

"NBC New York walked with him and saw a dead gull, a dead #goose bobbing in the water and various other smaller birds strewn along the small stretch of sand.

"Jones contacted the Department of Environmental Conservation. The DEC said it appeared to be avian flu because there have been cases in Suffolk County and Nassau County before. Officials from the department urged the community to close the beach to avoid any contact with the dead birds."

Aujourd'hui encore, on continue de détester le "corbeau marin" et de l'accuser de la destruction des poissons d'eau douce. Que ce soit chez les pisciculteurs, chez certains services de l'État (qui s'intéressent plus à l'aspect économique qu'à la réalité écologique) ou dans les médias généralistes ou locaux, le discours est catégorique : c'est un nuisible. À ce titre, il est possible d'obtenir des dérogations pour tuer ces oiseaux.
Pourtant les études scientifiques montrent que le cormoran a un impact négligeable sur les grandes exploitations piscicoles (qui ont des moyens de s'en protéger) et qu'il est parfaitement intégré aux milieux aquatiques et que sa présence participe à leur équilibre naturel. Mais entre les personnes qui pensent que l'espèce humaine doit tout réguler/dominer et ceux qui ne croient que dans l'économie, c'est mal barré de faire accepter l'animal.
