Bluesky, Billionaires, And Dodo Birds

People say that Bluesky might turn into Twitter and be purchased by a billionaire

I know Jay doesn’t want this to happen. And in theory it won’t due to the possibility of decentralization, but we’ve been burned multiple times.

Shall we do it again? Sure, why not. 😵‍💫😜

I mean, until that happens Bluesky is much easier to handle than Mastodon.

I’m not dumping on Mastodon or ActivityPub or the Fediverse. Not one bit. I’m still there and posting. Constantly… Posting.

Just Bluesky seems to have captured the zeitgeist of the old times on Twitter.

Hopefully, Bluesky won’t go the way of the dodo.

Somebody with deep knowledge about #ActivityPub (the decentralized #Fediverse protocol that #Mastodon is also using) & the architecture of #Bluesky wrote a long-read about the wrong impression that Bluesky is a decentralized or #federated service.

dustycloud.org/blog/how-decent

In short: no, it's not. It's yet another centralized company that can - and according to experience - will go south some day.

«There are multiple ways this could end up being a problem for the decentralized world; one irritating way is that people might believe there's an "easy decentralized way to do things" that Bluesky has discovered which isn't actually that at all, and another is that Bluesky could collapse at some point and that people might walk away with the impression of "oh well, we tried #decentralization and that didn't work... remember Bluesky?"»

Do spare you extra work & maintain your social network here instead. It'll outlive the centralized alternatives.

And try to teach journalists!

Our podcast about the fediverse, Dot Social, is one today! 🎉 It’s been such an honor to host the builders of the social web on this show and to learn from them. We have one more episode coming up in 2024 (read the blogpost to find out who @mike will be chatting with) then rest, then back at it in 2025.

@Dofain @RavenLuni

The root cause of all these discussions is all the positive press #bluesky has been getting and the lack of #mastodon press or even negative comparisons. It has created existential dread from @Gargron all the way down. I haven't haven't had this feeling in tech before.

Capitalism is irrelevant to this discussion. I would argue, in some ways, #federation is irrelevant to this discussion.

I don't want to take anything away from Jay Graber. She is an effective leader that has steered her company to massive growth,

But I feel like she needs to work on her elevator pitch for what it means for a system to be "decentralized". Note: no one says the word "federated" in this interview.

Of course, it would be nice if #bluesky was *actually* decentralized. Maybe that is why she struggles with the question?

It's already more than one-way: mastodon.social/@pcottle@threa

That's more than, for example, the "enter the fediverse" #activitypub #wordpress plugin.

This means that one of #federation's main goals has already been achieved: users from different platforms can interact. For many, this is meaningful. I think that's great.

But of course there are still many restrictions. They are working on this, which takes time. platformer.news/threads-175-mi Fingers crossed!

@JesseSkinner

Boosted. But I find the Bluesky jealousy to be weird and non-productive.

Mastodon software is not where it needs to be.

Following people sucks for new users.

It's weird that following hashtags is better than following people...and then hashtags are hidden in the UI.

I hate that I can't see my all my lists on one page.

Why isn't the mobile app as good as the mobile web page?

It's time to reflect and rebuild.

As Bluesky experiences great momentum, you might want to check out @mike's interview with Bluesky CEO @jay.bsky.team. It’s a fascinating look at how the company is thinking about identity, feeds, its place in the open social web, and the future of the web itself.

@openrightsgroup

Esp. appreciate this language:

[BlueSky's decision] not to support #ActivityPub means their #federation does not work with #Threads or #Mastodon. This has produced the absurd outcome that both Threads ... and #Bluesky may claim to provide #interoperability and account porting, but so far intend to ensure that there is no significant interoperability between them, because of business decisions to back different protocols.

Im writing a thought piece on #Bluesky/Big Social/Big Tech etc and I came across information about Bluesky PDS federation. I had no idea you can host your own instance of Bluesky and federate to the hub (and on out into the #fediverse I assume). Well, there you go. Changes how I think about this, in some ways at least.

@eosfpodcast @futurebird @danilo Exactly.

And if Bluesky really is what it claims to be, they will roll out full, universal, bidirectional support for #federation in a few months. In which case, I would have no NEED to join Bluesky, at all. If not, they were misleading their customers and weren't even the most basic level of trustworthy to begin with.

As for the user interface preferences some have for Bluesky, well... there is no one UI for Mastodon. I use elk.zone.
Looks like Twitter to me!

#mastodon perception poll.

How would you describe the content available to you on Mastodon, via #federation, etc.
