#WindowsRecall is opt in -- for now. Microsoft can change that at any point. Being #ProprietarySoftware users can do nothing about it.
Disabling #MicrosoftCopilot isn't easy … and in some cases it appears not to stay disabled:
#Microsoft bundles #genAI tools with #Windows11 - whether the user wants it or not.
This includes #MicrosoftCopilot and the controversial Recall tool.
Why controversial?
#WindowsRecall records all activity on your computer, including messages sent to you. This is why the chat app #Signal has to work around Recall -- to protect your and your contacts' privacy from the #Windows OS!

“ #Microsoft has simply given us no other option,” #Signal says as it blocks #WindowsRecall
#SignalMessenger is warning the users of its #Windows Desktop version that the #privacy of their messages is under threat by #Recall , the #AI tool rolling out in #Windows11 that will #screenshot , index, & store almost everything a user does every 3 seconds.
Effective immediately, Signal for Windows will by default block the ability of Windows to screenshot the app.

Microsoft is rolling out its controversial Recall feature to Windows users with Copilot+ PCs. However, there are still many privacy and security concerns that remain, even after its reworking.

YES, Microsoft is going to take a screenshot of everything you do on your computer.
Accept that the only way to ensure your privacy, safety, and security is to try, Linux.
Microsoft is going to Microsoft. They are like an abusive partner, who sees no reason to listen, because they assume you will never leave. You can prove them wrong, or accept their abuse. - The choice is yours.

Snapshots won't be saved when some remote desktop connection clients are used. The following remote desktop connection clients are filtered from snapshots:
• Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe)
• VMConnect.exe
• Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Microsoft Store is saved in snapshots. To prevent the app from being saved in snapshots, add it to the app filtering list.
• Azure Virtual Desktop (MSI)

If you want things private, you should... probably be careful about using the Signal app on, say, a machine with auto-screenshot capabilities built right in, too.

Fun fact: I've talked to my mother, who is currently still on #Windows10, about #Windows11 and #WindowsRecall and she was like "nah, I don't want that". Then I said "well basically everything you're doing is in the browser anyway, I could set up your machine with #Linux …"
and she was like
"yeah, why not?"
Folks, #Recall is making my mom, a non-techie who is a year from retirement, migrate to Linux!
This is awesome.
If you enable Windows Recall on your device, please do not sync any contact info you have for me, or exchange any kind of digital comms with me, using that computer.
Any conversation we have using your Windows machine can and will be captured without my consent.
You cannot consent on my behalf - so if you're going to use Windows Recall, please don't contact me using your Windows device.
Ever.
Important Warning About Windows Recall :
If you communicate with someone
who might be using the upcoming Microsoft's Windows Recall feature, be extremely careful about what information you share with them.
Regardless of what secure application you use, be especially careful about sending:
- Intimate photos
- Passwords or other sensitive information
- Medical conditions
- Personal details, even through secure emails or secure encrypted chats
- Financial information
- Video chats, even encrypted ones
This feature will unfortunately extract your information from whatever secure software you might have used and store it on this person's computer in a possibly less secure way.
Of course this person could manually take a screenshot of all of this anyway, but this feature makes it that even a well-intentioned person might either not be aware it is on, or might wrongly assume it is secure enough.
This feature isn't fully released yet, but it might be soon. More information:

Me, after Microsoft's Recall feature becomes wide spread:
"Before we continue talking: Are you a Windows Recall user? Because if you are a Windows Recall user you are obligated to tell me? Are you? Are you?"
