I transplanted these to a sunnier spot a couple years ago and now they are happier than ever.
Some more irisses in my garden. The last 3 colours are taking a bit longer than usual in this dry weather. I guess they're still about a week away from blooming.

Iris borders are very rare. They need immense patience and a lot of space. They are over in days and rather dull most of the time.
But they are the pinnacle.

When the blooms have died the leaves are cut and gathered into bundles, distributed for use in 'shōbu-yu' (菖蒲湯).
It is custom to take sweet-flag (iris leaf) baths for the 5th day of the 5th month celebrations (now known as "Kodomo-no-hi こどもの日 or "Children's Day").
