NM #primaryschool students will take the “#AI enhanced” Amira reading test (replacing iStation). When asked how the AI will be able to correctly compute #newcomer accents, speech impediments, etc. to accurately determine #student #fluency and placement, the trainer - I kid you not - opened up the Amira AI chat to ask it how it worked. It received a very confident answer about using multiple measures. This happened in front of my actual eyeballs. #education #elementary #newmexico #assessment

Well, I’m impressed and pleased. Via #albuquerqueteachersfederation ”For Elementary educators, there is a long-overdue increase in the pot of money for leadership differentials. Back to school grump: #aps shared it’s back to #school PD and it’s 1) Gathering the thousands of APS teachers into a room, and 2) listening to a keynote speaker talk about #studentengagement when he works at a #charterschool that declines #IEP students. elementary OS 8 Updates Add New Dock Features + More

The team behind elementary OS recently detailed a number of improvements to recently roll out to users of the distro. Gala, the default window manager used by the Pantheon desktop environment, is described as seeing an “absolutely massive release” fixing scores of issues and plumbing in a new Gesture Controller offering tangible improvements to the way gestures work. Precisely how? Hey: I ain’t the developer! But reading the pull request which adds the changes it sounds like the new Gesture Controller ought to deliver smoother interactions, hard to convey in words, but things like properly calculated deceleration, handling of gesture cancellation and :sys_more_orange:

elementary OS Preview Some Cool Upcoming Features

The elementary OS 8.0.1 release back in March brought an appreciable set of improvements with it, including a much-improved Files app, but as ever in development: the work never stops! Project founder, Danielle Foré, recently recapped a few smaller features that have been issued to users of the Ubuntu-based Linux distribution as software updates, including: If you run elementary OS 8.x, install your updates and eat your greens, you should be benefitting from the changes listed above (if you don’t have them, go update to get ’em). elementary OS 8.1 Brings Bug Fixes, New Kernel + More

Didn’t get around to trying last year’s elementary OS 8.0 release? No bother as elementary OS 8.1 arrived this week, providing an opportune jumping-on point for new users. Based atop the recent Ubuntu 24.04.2 release, elementary OS 8.1 is powered by Linux kernel 6.11, Mesa , etc. The kernel uplift also remedies a number of annoying issues which had affected those using the distro on AMD hardware. Foundational fittings aside, elementary devs also sort of fixed, fine-tuned and finessed many of the apps, tools, and home-grown technologies the distro ships with. “We’ve been hard at work this winter addressing issues :sys_more_orange:
