De m.i. beste tip: zorg er éérst voor dat je zoveel mogelijk bere-interessante informatie deelt, en zo min mogelijk mensen irriteert (en zeker niet op hun tenen trapt, doe *niet* betweterig als ik ;-).
Kondig dán aan dat je overstapt, en leg tevens zorgvuldig uit waarom.
Zoals dat JIJ niet langer wilt dat JIJ jouw hele adresboek (lijst met contacten) met ZuckerMeta deelt, omdat je daar, aan NIEMAND in die lijst, *persoonlijk* om toestemming hebt gevraagd (en zelfs mensen toevoegt zonder dat te doen).
"Iedereen doet het" *IS* een sterk argument (hoewel niet 100% correct).
Want als enkelingen (zoals ik) zo absurd moeilijk doen door geen WhatsApp te gebruiken, helpt dat niets. Ook ik sta namelijk nog steeds in tig adresboeken.

Meta misbruikt die informatie om te weten wie wie kent. In HUN voordeel en in ONS nadeel. Jij bent het product dat zij verkopen of anderszins uitmelken.
Meta verzamelt de interesses van minstens enkelen van hen (met overeenkomende contacten) - op basis van allerlei bronnen (chats zijn E2EE, dus elders op internet - FB, Insta etc).
Aan de hand daarvan schat Meta in om wat voor "types" het bij de rest gaat (in welke "cirkels" zij verkeren, denk aan inkomensniveau en politieke voorkeuren, waaronder abortusrecht en euthanasie).
Om vervolgens, m.b.v. allerlei steeds "slimmere" algoritmes, de wijze vast te stellen waarop die voorkeuren (zie bijv. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_Analytica) het effectiefst kunnen worden "gecorrigeerd".
Ja, zo ver gaat dat echt. Ook weten wie wie kent is big business. Wie denk je dat de gigantische ICT infrastructuur voor WhatsApp (uiteindelijk) betaalt?
P.S. denk ook eens aan Threema (kost eenmalig een paar Euro, met Zwitserse i.p.v. Amerikaanse roots). Ik ben slechts gebruiker daarvan en heb verder geen enkel belang bij deze "advertorial".
D.w.z. anders dan dat ik voor diversiteit pleit: het houdt makers scherp en hopelijk is het aantal "slachtoffers" kleiner bij een catastrofe (je hebt dan waarschijnlijk een uitwijk).
Een alternatieve app, als anderen die ook gebruiken, is ook handig als je een nepbericht ontvangt van een zogenaamd in geldnood verkerende zoon of dochter. Een tweede kanaal dus; zelfs als één van de accounts gehackt is, is de kans kleiner dat dit ook voor het andere account het geval is.

Persönlich würde ich in so einem Fall aber die Extremfälle benennen, also z.B. "Eine Demokratie braucht Datenschutz weil [Argumente], Beispiel #CambridgeAnalytica hat möglicherweise(sie behaupten es auch selber) den #Brexit zu verantworten und die #USWahl2016 beeinflusst".
Und dann so was wie "Sollte das in einer Demokratie einfach passieren können?", "Es könnte jederzeit wieder passieren" hätte ich wohl vor einiger Zeit noch gesagt,
