Last Thursday (6 March) was a windy red flag day in southern New Mexico.

A structure fire broke out in the village of Cloudcroft around sunset when the winds were easing up a bit.

But in these extremely dry conditions:

"Sources indicate that they contained several small spot fires ignited by flying embers. Officials say one ember start was put out a surprising distance away, at the junction of highways 244 and 82."

That was over 1/2 mile (800 meters) away, and the conditions were not extremely windy.

Please also note that the Gila will begin fire restrictions tomorrow, Monday, 10 March. This is another sign of how dry the conditions are in the southwest US.

In 2023, fires in old growth forest areas across the Amazon increased by 152% compared to 2022. In Brazil, this situation worsened in 2024, when more than 53,000 fires were recorded through August – an 80% increase from the same period in 2023.

The Freeman Creek Sequoia Grove.
This grove suffered damage from massive wildfires over the last 4 or 5 years. I was worried this grove had suffered severe damage but I was pleased to see that it fared much better than I expected. Although some giant trees were lost, much of the grove survived. It is amazing to see the burn scars on some of the trees and yet they withstood the intense fire. They are magnificent.
