In early December 2011, I travel to San Francisco for due diligence with SAY Media as it prepares to acquire ReadWriteWeb. Then, on the 14th, the transaction goes through and I no longer own RWW. (part 065 of my Web 2.0 memoir, which completes the 20 chapters! Just 2 more posts to go, for the book's epilogue) cybercultural.com/p/065-sellin #InternetHistory #Web20

As we near the conclusion of my Web 2.0 memoir, we're now in the second half of 2011...and it's tough times for ReadWriteWeb. I worry about my relationship with Marshall, as I try to manage ructions within the writing team. It goes from bad to worse when several of our writers get poached by tech blog competitors. cybercultural.com/p/061-blog-b #InternetHistory #Web20

ReadWriteWeb's two-day conference in the summer of 2011 in New York City has amazing presenters and content, but attendance is disappointing and we lose money. After, there is a difficult face-to-face meeting and we part ways with another community manager. cybercultural.com/p/060-rww-2w #InternetHistory #Web20

In this instalment of 'Bubble Blog', my Web 2.0 memoir: It's mid-2011 and our writer woes are not getting better. It’s impacting page view numbers and social media referral traffic is also a concern.

During my trip to SXSW in March 2011, I catch up with a couple of ReadWriteWeb writers — one of them quite angry. Then when I get back home, I start thinking about big changes to our company. I was having a crisis of confidence and wanted to transition out of the CEO role, so that I could focus fully on editorial. cybercultural.com/p/058-readwr #InternetHistory #Web20

If I had to pinpoint when the rose-tinted view of Web 2.0 as an open-platform paradise began to fade away, the rise of Google Chrome over 2009 would be it. But I’d argue it was Facebook’s purchase of the trendy geek app FriendFeed in August 2009 that proved once and for all that big companies were in control of Web 2.0 now. cybercultural.com/p/040-web20- #InternetHistory #Web20 #FriendFeed

CyberculturalWhy 2009 Was When Big Tech Began To Control Web 2.0It's 2009 and Firefox is being challenged by Google’s new Chrome browser, as Microsoft IE continues its slow decline. Meanwhile, Facebook acquires trendy social software app FriendFeed.

I'm back in the US to attend Microsoft's PDC and the 2008 Web 2.0 Summit. Team ReadWriteWeb meets in San Francisco and despite the looming global financial crisis, we remain techno-optimists. This is also when I notice tech media pivoting to business news. cybercultural.com/p/036-web20- #InternetHistory #Web20 #2008GFC (p.s. @lucasgonze, you're in this one!)

@atomicpoet,

Yes.

The #Fediverse has loose-coupling and the #Web's fundamental essence going for it (#HTTP based CRUD operations, structured data, and resolvable identifiers).

The right to portable #identity and contact networks is baked-in.

There's nothing in the world that #Web20 silo platforms or thinkers can do about anything of this.

Why?
The Web provides a powerful abstraction layer for mass utilization of #Internet connectivity.

2023 is the year that innovation returns to the Web.
