Watching an episode of "Japan's Top Inventions" on #NHK about tactile paving.
It's kind of depressing when you see the inventor, who had a #VisionImpaired friend, searching for solutions...and not asking the people his invention was meant for...at first.

Then noone was interested to invest in his solution so he even offered the "Ministry of Construction" that he would pay for the tiles and the installation.
The first #TactilePaving was installed in 1967...

Thank you to the #ADHD, #Dyslexic and #VisionImpaired people here on mastadon who asked for audiobooks of my writings. The more people tell me their access needs, the better position I am in to encourage/ convince my publishers to make my work #Accessible.

Delighted my latest publisher agreed to make an #Audiobook of Wired Our Own Way; An Anthology of #Autistic Irish voices, which will be released tomorrow. Not sure all the platforms it will be on yet.

@stefan It occurrs to me that the #AltText hall of fame is not run by a #Blind or #VisionImpaired person because in the decades that alt text has been a thing, nobody from within this community has stopped to think that demonstrating how to do it well might be helpful for our cause. When an ally does it, we treat them like an intruder. Whatever. Enjoy your internet full of suboptimal alt text.

#TIL that actual #VisionImpaired people have pointed out the #ableism in the term "time blindness" (in my context, associated with #ADHD) and have requested that we sighted folk refrain from using it.

Never occurred to me, as I'm privileged, but it makes sense. Time isn't something anyone can actually "see" anyway, so nobody can be "blind" to it. What happens with ADHD (& with other neurodivergences too, I assume, I just don't know which ones) is that we don't perceive the passage of

A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals who would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.

Here's one people don't talk about as much: capitalize your hashtags properly, please!

Screen-readers have a hard time with hashtags as it is. It's a lot better at reading #ThePenIsMightier than it is at reading #thepenismightier :ganyustare:

#disabled #support #ally #blind #disability #VisionImpaired #ScreenReader #Mastodon #fediverse

BONUS: It's nice to put your hashtags at the end instead of inline (unless you're literally talking about hashtags like above). Hearing the screen reader say "hashtag" 82 times inline sucks when you could stop it halfway through the big list at the end
