Admittedly, the last 25 months have been like a Luis De Funes film, and not just because of their French origins. What I have experienced over the last two years can best be described as ‘exciting’ in a soothing way. ▶️ Highlights: 👉 Instead of simplifying and standardising the grid codes, they have become more difficult to comply with and have not been completely harmonised across Europe. The EU under the lead of ACER redefined standards on charging and gave a guideline for discharging also. DCC & RFG 2.0 (V1G & V2G). 👉 Demonstration of AC-BiDi EU pilot projects with solar inverters in the boot of a vehicle. Admittedly a bit bulky, but, yes that's future reality, a OBC needs to works as a solar inverter in future, beside that he additionally needs to be galvanic isolated. 👉 Even the last person in the industry must now have realised (okay, maybe not Elon, but he's distracted at the moment) that V2L is not suitable for connecting a vehicle to the power grid. 👉 In Germany, the government is being blamed for ‘Kleinstaaterei in grid codes’ for not approving BiDi. Sorry, but that's complete BS and completely dubious. ▶️ Now for the positive: 👉 Bidirectional charging will become a normal part of electric vehicle use in future. I see a lot of support outside the automotive industry for enabling V2G 👉 The grid codes and general rules for electric vehicles on the grid are set by the EU and serve as guidelines for future developments. There are no exceptions for AC BiDi. Whining and complaining, as well as the use of voodoo dolls, will not change that. Good news for the OEM's they can start no scribbling roadmaps and spec-sheets. 👉 The increasing demand for flexibility in the energy market and variable grid fees make BiDi a valid business case, V2H & V2G. Although it won't be several thousand € a year, but it could be 500 to 1,000€/a. ▶️ What happens now: 👉 If the industry continues to collaborate like one DCC and RFG 2.0, we will have specifications for AC BiDi defined by mid-2027. It is not yet entirely clear which components and functions will be installed and implemented in the vehicle and which in the AC-BiDi Wallbox. 👉 Car manufacturer are implementing BiDi with ISO 15118-20, TLS 1.3 & OCPP 2.1. 👉 Now that it is clear how the hardware will be specified from 2028 onwards, it will be important to focus on the software. However, this also means a lot of work in terms of cyber security and interoperability with other energy assets. ⏭️ I hope that the next two years will bring fewer religious discussions with less empty rhetoric. Almost 32% of the EVs sold in Australia is 2024 had #V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability, i.e. provided a 230V AC outlet. These were mainly #BYD, #MG, #Kia, #Hyundai and #Genesis models.

They do this by having a small inverter in the car to convert the DC from the battery pack into usable AC power ranging from 2.2kW to 3.3kW, either inside the car and/or via an external adaptor plugged into the AC charge port. Here are the top 25 models from 2024 and whether they currently support V2L and some photos of various model V2L adaptors.

V2L is a useful capability to use your EV battery to run small appliances when away camping or during a power blackout like your fridge, freezer, phone chargers, internet routers and even dialysis machines.

Unfortunately many of the biggest selling EV brands don’t support V2L yet, e.g. #Tesla, #BMW, #Volvo, #Mercedes and #Polestar

Fortunately third parties are working on V2L devices as a retrofit option for Teslas, which don’t currently have V2L, using an external inverter.

Using an external inverter to provide V2L, connects directly to the EV battery DC via the CCS2 plug, and is a more expensive solution than a V2L adaptor provided by the EV manufacturer, which uses an inverter inside the EV.

This technology is similar to how future #V2H and #V2G could work on existing EVs.

This could make me[1] pretty much energy independent. It makes much more sense to me to run #V2H or #V2G from the car I already have, than installing a separate small wall battery.

I'd only use a fraction of my #EV battery overnight, so I'd happily sell *some* of the rest back to balance the grid - for a fair price.

I could become an #ElectricityBaron !

and (as predicted) doesn't yet work with rooftop solar - this is pure vehicle-to-grid #V2G, not vehicle-to-home (#V2H).

The fixed tariff applies to the whole household (not just the car), and users collect 'V2G Hours' for the time they're plugged in (after charging to their set minimum % and before the set departure time)

early adopter problems: I own a BYD Dolphin #ev with the chinese connector and now I really want to know how I can ghetto the battery to do #v2h with my #solar #pv setup. It comes with a 10A adapter for #V2L at 220V. Ideally I would want a plug and forget solution that discharges only as much as I need at home and avoid draining the battery into the grid. Any ideas?
