#MastodonAppUK & #Universeodon Members Note:

Just to reassure, I am aware of and monitoring what's happening over on Fosstodon when it comes to their decision to retain a moderator who from what I can see on the Fediblock threads would be problematic. Given the substantial following / followers relationships between the 3 instances (MastodonApp.UK / Fosstodon and Universeodon.com / Fosstodon) I'm waiting to see if there is any further updates / changes in the situation over there as defederating would have a noticeable impact to the community here and I'm very aware that to undo that in the future would be impossible.

I am hoping there is some element of misunderstanding somewhere here and that this can be resolved but if not we will take the appropriate moderation action to protect our members and communities here. I'll keep folks up to date and give plenty of warning before any permanent moderation damage is done.

We're running into some issues on #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon due to a issue with one of our underlying hosts. The impact should be fairly minimal but things might be a bit bumpy while I resolve the issue.

We're seeing some issues on #Universeodon which look to be the result of our primary router on one of our servers running into some issues which is impacting our Redis and Search connectivity. I'm working on the issue at this time.

Apologies for the #Universeodon issues earlier. We are having some major issues with content processing which spilled over to a wider outage. I'll be taking further steps to mitigate the issue later today but I'm out at dinner right now and can't do any more than get things provisionally online from my phone.

We are running into some issues with federation on #Universeodon right now, it looks like incoming posts to the instance are fine but we're not getting jobs outbound sent and I am not 100% sure why at this time (Including to this instance!). I am looking into it so apologies if folks out there suddenly get a load of notifications from our site it'll be where we've queued up about 2 million events that seem to be stuck in a retry loop

We are seeing some outbound federation issues here on #Universeodon - I am looking into it now and trying to work out what's gone wrong.

I've just published our first service review for #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon for the month of March this year which covers off our main availability for the monitoring we have in place as well as a review of the various incidents and disruptions we had. If folks find it useful or have any other feedback please let me know so I can start to add details and metrics that might be valuable!

Sorry about the blip there folks here on #MastodonAppUK, it is unrelated to the earlier issues on #Universeodon and I think should now be resolved but I'll continue to keep an eye.

I will post some pictures this week but had a lovely week in #Edinburgh this week with @PrinceMumbles and got some time to rest and reset after what has been a really busy start to the year.

I've got quite a lot going on still though and one of the key things I'm hoping to start getting sorted is the next infrastructure migration here on #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon where we're going to be moving away from rented dedicated servers and onto co-location hardware for the applications, I am hoping (all things going well) to be able to place the order for the kit in June and get it rack and stacked in June to start to migrate some of the work over and to ultimately start to reduce our monthly rental footprint.

I'm going to shortly bring us up to date with the latest Mastodon patch release on both #Universeodon and #MastodonAppUK - I'm not expecting this to be majorly disruptive but there will be a short blip while I re-build and restart everything.

We have added freysa.ai to our #FediBlock list here and on #Universeodon following a boat load of AI Generated spam / nonsense.

We've seen a notable reduction in contributions over the last couple of months, but sadly our operating costs have continued to significantly increase, throughout February our media storage bill went up approx $200USD compared to the month before.

While I can (and will) continue to pick up any costs where they aren't covered by the generous contributions of the community here, if you are in a position where you'd like to contribute a bit of cash towards the running costs it would be always appreciated.

Apologies #Universeodon folks - It looks like our Sidekiq crashed again around 8 hours ago. As part of the work I need to do this weekend to get us ready for some host maintenance being performed by our provider I'm hoping we should be able to scale things back up to where they need to be.

I've just been notified that one of our production servers is going to be relocated to a different data hall by our infrastructure provider with about 2 weeks notice. Annoyingly it's the server that runs 3 of our web nodes for MastodonAppUK, Universeodon and the Universeodon relay.

I'm not expecting this to cause any public disruption, but will be spending this weekend getting things ready so I can migrate the traffic over prior to the server move happening. There may be some short notice maintenance over the coming weeks to ensure I can accommodate this and it doesn't cause an outage on move day.

To resolve ongoing issues over on MastodonApp.UK I need to perform a reboot of one of our core switches which will have a short impact here on #Universeodon - Apologies for any disruption.

The work to resolve some issues on #MastodonAppUK and the #Universeodon relay are taking longer than expected. There has also been a knock on impact to the content processing here on #Universeodon which I've managed to get semi-resolved and is now catching up.

I've posted the latest on https://status.atlas-media.co.uk and will keep the more detailed posts there but apologies again, this was supposed to be a quick flip behind the scenes to allow me to re-build some capacity and get some issues resolved and it just hasn't worked so well.

I think it would be a good idea to split up my #mastadon project a bit.

Trying out #universeodon because mastodon.social had too much non-english language content in the feed. I like the idea of being a part of a global community, but if I can't read 80% of what's in the feed is hard to find content to engage with.

If this server is good enough for @georgetakei then it's probably good enough for me.

Universeodon really needs to do better
