This might be the most gorgeous slideshow you ever see, informative as well about the Gion festival and Kyōto. Japanese festivals are above all presented as Shintō rituals. The Gion Matsuri began in 869 to ward off epidemics, but was ironically canceled during the recent pandemic. Longtime research and insider experiences in Japanese, with guidance by a Gion festival leader, culminate in fascinating information and annotated photos.

Aoi festival in Kyōto every May. Hundreds of thousands attend the events, but I had a front row position for this one.
In the Takayama float of the Gion Matsuri: the view from up where flutes and other traditional gagaku instruments are played during the July 24th parade.

The floats are held together mostly by ropes, good for dismantling and　reassembling. Big wheels fastened by ropes support floats weighing tons. A dangerous role is inserting a block to turn the float on narrow roads.
