Hello #Fediverse, here's your "daily" OS-kuns

This one is of the OSX Cats!

They represent the Mac OS X versions 10.0 through 10.4, respectively. They are Mac OS 9-tan and Mac OS 9-kun's younger brothers. This group, which frequently leaves out Reobo, consists of characters like Cheetah and Tiger, though rarely there is sometimes one for Mac OS X Leopard.

Mac OS 9-tan is very special to the OSX Cats; they treat her like a sister and gladly handle all household chores on her behalf. The OSX Cats are shown as a cheetah, puma, jaguar, panther, tiger, and leopard in the first image, from left to right.

They are quite tough and have had extensive training from KanjiTalk 7.5-tan. Little interaction occurs with other characters because all five of them always appear together. They lack organization and intelligence, and their distinctive personalities has not yet been fully developed.

Decided to do a minor update to MS-DOS-kun's page to address an annoying misconception about MS-DOS's release date that I noticed *all* other MS-DOS OS-tans have. It seems that people mistake the first version of MS-DOS being released in 1981 due to the Wikipedia article, but the MS-DOS name didn't come until Microsoft did their first OEM release to the computer clone makers which was version 1.25 and released in April 1982.

While BetaWiki still has 1981, this is for the unreleased internal release named MS-DOS 1.20 and not the first public release. The source the Wikipedia entry for MS-DOS's release date for it goes to a site that is a brief history of MS-DOS and is going by the release date for the IBM PC, which is August 1981.

However, The MS DOS Encyclopedia, BetaWiki and 16BitOS say otherwise to Wikipedia and use 1982 as the release date. The attached image even shows the MS-DOS name didn't come until 1982 and it was PC DOS that came first as per The MS DOS Encyclopedia, which is published by Microsoft Press. Microsoft Press is the publishing arm of Microsoft, usually releasing books dealing with various current Microsoft technologies so it would be weird to say the book is false...

Hell, even the first version of PC DOS that came with the IBM PC has 1981 on the BetaWiki for the release unlike the first public version of MS-DOS.

This is why I always dig hard when making characters because people will skim over Wikipedia and not check other sources

Hello #Fediverse, here's your "daily" OS-tan art!

Along with my BSD-tans posts you can have this one of Plan 9-tan!

Plan 9-tan is a quirky person who initially confuses almost every OS-tan she encounters. She has a strong sense of self-worth and appreciates thoughtful, sophisticated solutions—though not always lovely aesthetics.

She possesses the charm and organisational abilities required to bring her family members who turned against her back together and form the User Space Gang. However, she is referred to as "alien" or "just plain weird" by other OS-tans outside of the User Space Gang. She is gregarious but uneasy in social situations, and her friends' peculiarities only serve to accentuate her quirks. She enjoys watching vintage B-movies and has a lot of weird hobbies.

Hello #Fediverse, here's your "daily" OS-tan art!

This one is a group picture featuring FreeBSD, NetBSD, DragonflyBSD and OpenBSD!

I won't describe all the characters due to the word limit here but FreeBSD-tan, the second eldest of the BSD-tans, is a dynamic leader known for her spontaneity and love of adventure. Despite her laid-back demeanor, she completes tasks efficiently and on time. NetBSD-tan, her younger sister, is depicted as timid but with an adventurous side, reflecting the portability of NetBSD. FreeBSD-tan is depicted as a tall woman with blonde spiky hair and purple eyes, wearing punk-inspired clothing. Her weapon of choice is a nightstick.

DragonflyBSD is the one only without info for her character, so that can be left up to interpretation?

The #Worldbuilding and character project I’ll be sharing here is called Operating Superstars, which is my recent take on the concept of personifying computers and operating systems.

I wrote several bios for characters representing 70’s and 80’s computers as a starting point but still have several more to go 😅

Many of them are part of the team COSMOS (Computing Old-School Museum of Superstars). Several members are formal rivals that work together as historians, museum curators and archivists while they continue to demonstrate their skills as writers, artists, performers or as teachers at retro-themed events.

Although their time in the limelight ended long ago and many are originally from teams that long went defunct, they found new lives in COSMOS. On the site for the project, they have a central narrative role being the group that archives a lot of computing history and their setting’s history.

The banner for this site features “The 1977 Trinity”; Trish (TRS-80), Petunia (Commodore PET) and Diana (Apple II). They are three of the founding members of COSMOS. In this drawing they're in the library which I imagine would have lots of 1970's space age aesthetics.

I published the site on Wordpress.com last year but want to move somewhere else after the parent company’s recent selling of users’ content data to AI companies! I opted out but I feel disillusioned. Since what I wrote there is still in its early stages, it’s still subject to change on here or a new site.
