While I don’t read any comment on Hacker News, I’m really pleased by the quality of exchanges on lobste.rs, also in private messages.

It seems that the invite-only mechanism and strong moderation to keep stuff on topic is working well. Thank you lobsterians…

PS: yes, I can invite you if you ask nicely and send me an email address. I can also invite you on the smaller and cozier tilde.news (where I would like to see more discussions).

Did you know that #France & #Brazil almost went to #war over #lobsters?

In the 1960s, the French had lost most of their colonies & started having trouble meeting fishing quotas. They turned to Brazilian waters.

France's interference in the Brazilian maritime space led to a diplomatic battle.

Then the two Navies got involved & soon, all mobilised for a true war.

The US & UN had to intervene & in December 1964, Brazil granted France lobster rights IF they shared profits.

They did.

Lobsters are intelligent and fascinating animals, capable of living over 100 years in their natural habitats. As members of the crustacean family, which also includes shrimp, crabs, and krill, they exhibit unique behaviors and remarkable sensitivity. Unfortunately, these sentient beings are frequently exploited in the seafood industry. Each year, over 300 million lobsters are taken from their ocean homes, subjected to suffering throughout their journey through the cruel seafood industry to people’s plates. idausa.org/campaign/wild-anima

During the 1700s lobsters were so plentiful that they used to wash ashore on Massachusetts beaches in piles up to 2 feet high. Lobsters were considered the “poor man’s chicken” and primarily used for fertilizer or fed to prisoners and slaves. Some indentures servants even revolted against being forced to eat the meat and the colony agreed that they would not be fed lobster meat more than three times a week. #lobsters

"#Lobsters are widely accepted as the key predator of #SeaUrchins, and this information has informed management strategies to control exploding #SeaUrchin numbers that threaten temperate #reefs... In a new study, a camera was set up in a #lobster den and sea urchins were strategically placed in it. Surprisingly, the majority of the sea urchins were eaten—not by lobsters—but by #sharks."
