even people with legal status are being affected. people who are going through all the steps needed to remain here legally. people who have green cards are being threatened, people who have citisenship this vague nebulous removal of citisenship that isn't even in the heretofore powers of the president. none of those rules matter anymore, it's 1984 and Brave New World writ large.
these funds are going directly to those families' needs, in ways that will not impact any benefits or legal proceedings that these families may currently have. these are immigrant families and the person being grabbed is often the breadwinner for the family, adding financial insecurity to the massive pile of legal costs to get things 'sorted out' if that is at all possible.

I've made a lot of progress in physical therapy the past two years but five minutes of standing in front of my desk trying to box it up? my heart rate's nearing 140 and my back is screaming at me.

Outside of living costs, my wheelchair batteries are slowly approaching end of life due to... idk planned obsolescence bullshit with lithium-ion batteries and how much you can charge them and get out of them per charge as they get older and-- a lot of shit I don't understand but the point IS, they're slowly dying on me.
My wheelchair is how I go places without a million exhaustion Every Time. The optimal OEM replacement is $500 (plus whatever shipping); I can't even figure out what non-OEM option might work, plus I'd rather not risk fires and explosions. (Mind you, I don't know why a 24v 20Ah (480Wh) battery is $500 but that's fucking disability markup for you.

(Also, I need a better/different cushion. My tailbone hates my current one - it worked great for my old chair but... lmao.)
We have a vague plan to ask a local-ish medical supplies store if they carry or can get this battery and if so, how much (aka will it be a better price than ordering it ourselves) but we'll still need to be able to *pay* for it.
So... if anyone is able to help out, that's great. 
(If any of y'all know someone who can absolutely spare a whole $500 at once, stick this in their face and be like "come on help them keep their independence" lolol.)

quick intro: @inoru_no_hoshi and I are two Deaf, disabled, Jewish/Jewish-ish, neurodivergent/autistic/ADHD and unemployed queers in southern California.
it's super expensive living here and we receive no social welfare whatsoever.
spouse does a job training program, I do community college, and none of those make money out of thin air.
I'm currently unemployable, no driver's license, too much disability, etc.
we get $125/month from the sale of my car, and everything else comes from the kindness of others!

- cat food and cat litter. our cat Zoey thanks you. but seriously, this is how we're able to buy her wet food and something better than the house store brand kibble that even most of the outdoor cats won't touch.
- necessary professional clothing. uncharted territory etc, and it's definitely taken a tone up from what we'd previously been getting away with.
- food at the end of the month when our food stamps has run out.
- bills! the bills don't stop no matter what I do and we currently have anywhere from $150 to $500 in bills per month.

my name's key, and my spouse @inoru_no_hoshi and I are disabled queers who are trying to escape my psychologically and verbally abusive father, and stay afloat from bills when I haven't worked since mid-2023; I've applied for SSDI but it's a massive wait time and backlog and they probably won't approve me on the first try anyway. so we need to survive now and it's been pretty tight.
we need to pay off the card we used to buy my spouse a power wheelchair earlier this year, because their old one was declining and unsafe. we have other bills too.
direct giving puts the power to help someone in your hand, not relying on some other source of help that there might it might not be.
people are having a hard time of it and that five or ten or twenty dollars that is a cup of coffee and some pastries at Starbucks or whatever directly helps people who have for instance been unemployed, or who are disabled, or who work two jobs and it's still not enough—there's a whole multitude of reasons people need help, and all of them function by the poor having to disclose so much about our lives and put our horrors out for public consumption like almost trauma porn to be frank.
direct giving puts it back into individuals' hands and gives the recipients agency and immediate help.
