4/ On another section-- it was a bit difficult last week to get around a large boulder (height of a person). Involved descending slightly, going around the boulder, and ascending again. However, I also recall that with the deep snow, the snow sidewalk was elevated halfway up the boulder and the trail simply bent around the top half of the boulder-- easy! Either way, so much fun, summer and winter! END #hiking #backpacking #mountains

I’m a moderate #ultralight gear weenie and have made my own tarps and whatnot for years. But on my last #backpacking trip, a friend loaned me his Tarptent Aeon Lithium. It weighs 18 oz (500 grams) and is extremely roomy and comfortable for one. Unlike my tarps, it keeps the bugs out and has a floor to keep things clean. I’m currently desperately trying to resist the urge to buy one. The fact that they cost $650 is helping me resist, but not as much as it should.

Please send help.

August 19, 1983, 42 years ago today: As I approached Greylock’s summit, I passed through an alpine forest — stunted, twisted shrubs of dwarf fir and spruce. I had been making such good time I was able to dawdle along and enjoy the New England experience as well as the extensive views at the end.

August 19, 1983, 42 years ago today: The terrain between Dalton and Cheshire was typical of the Berkshires: long, relatively flat ridge crests covered with boggy areas. Vast expanses of luxuriant fern growth in great variety carpeted the forest floor. The ridges were densely wooded, frequently featuring cool, dark coniferous forests.

The Road to Mt. Sinai (2022)

I took this shot as we had just finished our ascent to the highest point of our #Backpacking trip that day. This scene later struck me as similar to an illustration from my childhood of the biblical Mt Sinai that Moses climbed. Hiking through #Yukon #Canada continues to be one of my favourite hiking memories, despite the harsh weather and brutal terrain we conquered.
