I went ahead and subscribed to Kagi. It's the best web search experience I've had in years.

Paid search? Yes. Absolutely yes. It actually makes sense. No search engine runs for free. There are costs involved. "Free" search engines monetize your data, behaviors, serve you ads, and try to sell you stuff.

Kagi is refreshingly different.

The free trial spoiled me - no other search engine I used could really measure up to it after that.

The results are really good. Relevant. Clean.

Waterfox, the open source browser developed by a British developer from 🇬🇧, has just released a new metasearch engine powered by Google results.

They promise it'll be an engine with no tracking, no invasive advertising, and a cleaner interface. It'll have custom themes, advanced search options and a domain block list. And no AI.

Their business model is based on contextual ads (they ask you to disable your ad blocker) and maybe a subscription-based tier that removes all ads. If they can't make money, they say they might have to rethink their approach.

There is no genuinely European #searchengine, is there? Most “alternatives” use #Google or Bing from #Microsoft in the background.
The search engine “Good”, based in #Berlin, no longer has advertising, has a low-threshold subscription and has some other positive features.
Web data does not come from Big IT, but from @brave which focuses on privacy, but also raises a few question marks (crypto commitment, seed funders)

Resurrecting Qwant: New Owners Bet On GenAI To Provide Answers

"Frankly, in 2019, building a search engine was not affordable for Qwant and it never was," he said. "The mistake was not to explain that and try to hide it. Qwant has been focused on privacy. And the team had worked hard on a solution with Microsoft that meant it didn't share data with Microsoft."

Even now, New Qwant will need a 3rd party to help with long-tail search results. Still, the transformation at New Qwant was underway when Microsoft dropped a bomb: It was dramatically raising its search API rates. This change also hit other search engines like Ecosia that relied on Bing.

"18 months ago, Microsoft changed access to Bing's search API," he said. "They increased the price without any good reason. All of us realized that we were so dependent on Microsoft that their strategy change could kill us. We decided we should not be in the passenger side but that we should be in the driver's seat."

So Qwant and Ecosia teamed up to create a 50-50 joint venture called the European Search Perspective (EUSP). Qwant will transfer the search indexing infrastructure it was building as well as some of its engineers and data scientists. Ecosia is making a cash contribution."
