@jbond You take the photograph of the celestial object at the same time of day over a whole year. The shape is produced because of the tilt of the #Earth in its orbit. The slightly irregular shape by the fact that the orbit is not quite circular but #elliptical. I made a simulated #analemma and posted it here some time ago using #Sellarium, to show what happens.

@meteobures Ça y est ! Depuis le 2 à Bures-sur-Yvette, le #Soleil se lève de nouveau plus tôt que la veille. L'#analemme du Soleil y tangente l'horizon à 07:42 UTC tous les jours, et le venait juste d'y franchir le point de tangence.
Le début de la fin des grasses matinées ?
Ce fut plus tôt en remontant au nord jusqu'au cercle polaire arctique ; se sera plus tard en descendant vers le sud jusqu'au tropique du Capricorne (hémisphère sud).

Also, looking for sunset/sunrise graphs, I have learnt that the position of the sun in the sky observed from the same position on earth at the same time along the year is called an #analemma.
