#rc2014

I feel bad that there haven't been any #RC2014 updates recently, despite the fact that there's a lot going on.
A lot of things seems to be depending on everything else, leading to an all-or-nothing workload. I think there is going to be a flurry of new releases towards the end of the month (or early September) though.

In the meantime, if you can make it to #RC2014Assembly at Bletchley Park on September 20th, rc2014.co.uk/3855/rc2014-assem it would be great if you can sign up - particularly if you have something interesting to display or show off.

🚨 Website Update!
2014.samcoupe.com

Added an application note for my ZX True Tone module (ZXTT) to show the pinout for using it in other AY-3-8910/12 and YM2149 soundchip applications. While originally designed to replace a chip on Ed Brindley's RC2014 YM/AY soundcard it's ideal for other circuits where you use an AY to play ZX Spectrum music.

The ZXTT provides a clock signal to the soundchip of 1.7734MHz to match the 128K ZX Spectrum ensuring that playback of Speccy tunes is pitch (and envelope!) perfect. (A video on my page shows how much distortion a clock of 1.75MHz gives, which is often used for Speccy related AY circuits.)

Going to be going live in about 45 minutes with one more RC2014-related project: in a somewhat surprising turn of events, a viewer has donated an MG005 Speech Synthesizer kit for me to build. Hopefully I''ll do their contribution justice!

Join me from 2130 BST at twitch.tv/baljemmett if that sounds like your sort of thing.

Thanks everybody that responded, and sorry for not responding to every reply.

I think the results have confirmed my original thoughts. I will certainly be making a feature of the fact that this computer will run on just 3 chips, so hopefully that will keep the 26% that felt cheated happy.

As for the 36% Intrigued and 31% Curious, well, you should be. I won't go in to the details just yet, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

There's some updates needed to the prototype, but if all is well, some time next month I will introduce the latest kit to the #RC2014 stable.

Replied to RC2014

@rc2014 @electron_greg back in school we had a special, modular custom-bus based #intel8085 system to teach us about computers and programming.

It also had a switch panel and I fondly remember looking up opcodes in a photocopied table so that I knew which value to "toggle" next on the switches before writing it to a memory address. Hands on computing, the real way.

It was called #MFA (microcomputer für ausbildung - microcomputer for training) and it also ran CP/M and featured a #Siemens #SPS module (god, I hate SPS).

It was this system I learned #intel8085 #assembler on.

P.S.: I guess this baby and the fond memory I have of it made me fall in love with #rc2014 decades later ...

It's 5 years since I released my first peripherals for the #RC2014 ecosystem, so have £5 off each of my first releases from June/July 2020!

🟢 SID Soundchip Interface
- Use the legendary Commodore 64 soundchip in your setup (or modern replacement SwinSID or ARMSID). Also incorporates 50/60/100Hz Interrupt Controller (useful too when using other soundchips for timing playback code.)

🟢 Graphic OLED Interface
- Add an easy to use 128x32 pixel graphic display to your setup.

All the info / order / see what else I've released: 2014.samcoupe.com

Other RC2014 peripherals...

- *New for June 2025* SAA1099P Soundchip Interface.
- ZX True Tone (ZXTT), add-on module for Ed Brindley's YM/AY soundcard so it's clocked at the exact same frequency of the 128K ZX Spectrum so speccy tunes are pitch perfect.
- ZX-RC Bus Interface, to use RC2014 I/O peripherals with the #zxspectrum
- SAM-RC Bus Interface, as above but on the #SAMCoupe

I’m finding that #RC2014 CP/M can very easily be overwhelmed by the FT245 when using the download program to transfer files.

Using delays in Teraterm, I can either send a single file package fast (several kbytes/second) using a send size delay, or a multi file package slowly (120 bytes/second) using a per character delay.

That is still faster than I ever achieved using the SIO, which was probably 50-60 bytes/second, so I reckon that’s a win

It lives!

The #rc2014 version of my FT245 based USB interface works exactly as intended with SCM, Basic and the 6850 version of CP/M

No more faffing with USB-Serial dongles and #UART settings for me, terminal software simply doesn’t care about baud rates and the like with this board,

Now that the news is out, I guess I will be using the #RC2014Assembly hashtag on here.

And if you haven't seen the news, this is a meetup of the #RC2014 community at Bletchley Park on September 20th. This looks like it is going to be an awesome day with people showing off their hardware, demonstrating their software, and talking about what interests them with the RC2014 (including similar platforms like the RCBus or Z50 bus machines, or kits that run RomWBW etc).

Tickets don't go on sale until tomorrow, and I will post a working link (sorry about the oopsie in the newsletter) when they're available.

I hope that as many of you as possible can make it along, especially if you don't normally attend general retro computer meetups.
