"We now are in techno-authoritarianism.

We have to learn how to digitally #disobey.

That can be as simple as the dropdown box.

Don't accept the cookies,

don't give your real name,

... I do not consent.

#Privacy is power.

And we have more of it than we think."

How to Survive the Broligarchy · Speaking truth to tech gods: I return to TEDBy Carole Cadwalladr

Friends, I know fighting for privacy rights can be exhausting at time.

But it is truly a group effort,
and all your small gestures matter 💚

Each time you opt-out or oppose an abusive collection of personal data,
it matters.

Each time you choose a privacy-respectful software instead of a privacy-invasive one,
it matters.

Each time you help a friend or a stranger understand better how to protect their own data online,
it matters.

Each time you sign a petition or write to an official representative to tell them privacy rights are important to you,
it matters.

Each time you support a privacy advocacy organization or privacy-focused software,
it matters.

We need all this to push our culture in the right direction and to preserve and improve our collective privacy rights.

Please do not give up.
We need you to fight with us 🔒✊

There is a long battle
ahead of us. It will be essential to regroup, to support each other, and to protect each other.

This will affect many aspects of our lives, including data privacy.

When authoritarians want
control over their population, they seek data and they seek to kill privacy.

Because privacy means democracy,
because privacy means freedom, and
because privacy becomes a tool for popular resistance.

Be ready to fight for
your privacy rights.

This is vital.

We talk a lot about privacy in terms of security and safety. And, indeed, these are extremely important and perhaps the most obvious aspects of it.

But we should also remember that privacy can be ordinary as well. Each time you think:

"Arg! I don't want anyone to see this, that's personal!" 😣

Yes, this is also your right.

And yes, this is the very essence of data privacy.

If you read a cookie banner or a privacy policy with practices that make you angry as a user:

Yes, be angry.

This is what mandatory transparency is for.

Users, visitors, customers, and data subjects of all types *should* get angry when their data is being abused.

We are now entering an era where we get better information about organizations and institutions' practices.

The next step is to demand better practices.

Be angry.
Demand change.

@thomasfuchs I agree with you 100%. That is one of the main reasons I use @Waterfox and @librewolf (sometimes @Vivaldi) over Mozilla.

Most Linux distros have Firefox browser set as default. In my case, I deleted Firefox from my Linux Mint.

Oh, and as well as everyone else says - they should not just get rid of Google as search engine, but as well they should get rid of Google from about:config page.

If you search through about:config , you will find indeed lots of Google connections...wish they removed them all.

Losing all Privacy and all Privacy Rights:

Pros ✅
- don’t have to care about privacy anymore
- don’t have to write or read privacy policy
- don’t have to walk to the polling station
- don’t have to remember any password
- no cookie banner anymore cause everyting is cookie now 🍪

Cons ❌
- less or no democracy anymore
- might be killed for being gay online
- might be jailed for speaking against an unhinged authoritarian government
- unleashed discrimination for everything
- you sneezed! now your insurance costs double!
- less points from the candidate selection algorithms if you are not white or not men or not straight or not rich or not [place nightmare discrimination here] or if you failed your gym class in high school 20 years ago
- dangerous stalkers know where you live
- dangerous stalkers know where you work
- dangerous stalkers are everywhere
- dangerous stalkers in your cereals
- now you live in a Black Mirror episode thinking it would have been much easier to fight for privacy 10 years ago instead… 🙃:nes_fire:

Tiny Privacy Reminder 🔒💚✨:

Please remember friends,

If someone hides
their face,
their name,
or their IP address online,
it doesn’t necessarily mean they are being inauthentic or malicious. It actually very rarely means this.

Many people hide their identity or part of their identity online for protection. Especially people from vulnerable populations 💚

People who are
being or have been stalked, harassed, or assaulted will often hide their face, name, and location online for safety reasons 💚

People who are
part of a demographic regularly receiving hate comments online have very good reasons to hide their true identities as well 💚

Treating people
hiding their identities for protection like criminals
only victimizes further people already being victimized 💔

Recognizing the
Right to Privacy to everyone,
and recognizing everyone might have different reasons to protect themselves in different ways online is essential on the path for justice and equality ✊💚
