As Fediverse knows odd things...

Where (UK) can I buy a microscope?

I don't want to spend a lot, nor do I need anything fancy. Just a step up in quality from the cheap plastic Early Learning Centre one I have.

Second hand would be perfect. EBay has many, but I've no way of knowing if they're any good.

In my head, I'm picturing the solid, heavy things I used to use at school. One that old would, I'm sure, be fine.

Any suggestions?

But first, this thing hadn't been used for years, so I had to clean it a bit. Maybe it was also just an excuse to understand how this thing works :)

It's an inverted design and has two optical paths, one for the binoculars and one for the camera.

Thought I'd do a quick re-#introduction since I just moved under this beautiful rock. Let's see what life is like in a smaller place.

I feel right at home, because I'm mostly tooting and boosting about #inaturalist #entomology #microscopy #wildlife #mothing
But that's very on-and-off, call it seasonal maybe.
I also have a long running project trying to CNC-automate my #microscope. Image processing (stacking/stitching) is in place.

I might also comment or toot about a bazillion other things, anything from computer security to tree felling.

I live in Norway, where we build routers at Celerway.

3/x Lunchtime #microscope break!

If you enjoy zoomed in #LEGO you might also be interested in some #photos of a zoomed in kevlar blanket that flew to #space in the cargo-bay of Spaceshuttle Discovery (last on STS-82, a Hubble repair mission).

The material is more reflective than it appears so very high magnification photos are difficult with my setup (an old microscope illuminated by overhead light and a smartphone hovering over it for photos).

The setup. This is a kevlar and kapton (something that looks like very expensive aluminum foil) composite. The kapton is at the back (not visible) where it acts as an insulating layer. The kevlar is on the exposed side to protect stuff from micro-meteorites and clumsy astronauts. It had SCRAP stamped on it.

100x magnification. Due to the thickness of the material it's not possible to get the full vertical space in focus.

1/x Have you ever wondered how #LEGO degrades when it's buried in a sandy #Danish garden for about 30 years?

I did. Here's the answer. I took photos with a #microscope (30x magnification) of an old brick (1x2 slope) found in our garden, and a newish brick found on an elfish castle.

The photos (smartphone camera held above the oculair) answer the question of what it looks like.

The two bricks. Circled is the area photographed via the microscope. The new brick is never washed. The old brick was washed with soap after found in the garden. The old one has some clear scratches. Those are not the one visible in the microscope. In there much smaller dents and filled up damage is visible.
The new brick. Smooth surface, no discoloration and rounded edges. The little white spots are dust laying on top of the brick. The photo distorts the color into a hue. In real life it's a solid red.
The old brick. Discoloration is real. Scratches of different depth. There's a variety of dents and holes with missing material. Edges are less round than in the new one but still rather ok. Clutchpower is also perfectly ok: the brick functions as a new one.

I got a cheap USB #microscope to look at car paintwork, small electronics and the ratings label of some power supply units like mobile phone chargers, which are increasingly often way too small to read with bare eyes.

I also happen to have a 365nm UV torch in my kit bag, so I thought I would look at some printouts from the office printer - here you can see the unique machine identifier code added to the printouts (these are very faint yellow dots) #security #privacy #opsec

CuCl2 & LiCl ⚗️ 🧪 💎 🔬
anhydrous CuCl2 is a brown substance, which progressively turns green (and then blue) upon pickup of moisture. The CuCl2 we start with here has already developed quite a few green patches and is clearly not as dry as it could have been. Upon addition of highly deliquescent LiCl, we soon recover a brown color. 1/2
