In my head, possibly confusing it with previous waves of news media job losses, I was thinking the number was in the hundreds. A subsequent listen to MediaWatch corrected that, to just about 40;

rnz.co.nz/news/national/539662

Technically this is about 3 dozen, which is still a lot of people losing their livelihood, but ...

Mastodon - NZOSSStrypey (@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)In the midweek edition of MediaWatch, Colin Peacock talked about the latest changes at NZ Herald owner NZME, including canning the jobs of dozens of journalist - some of them senior - and pivoting to video (again); https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/mediawatch?share=449d7b63-84b6-4a2c-aeed-1ed310030916 As you might have guessed, I have ... thoughts. One of my permaculture teachers says;

If you're not making any mistakes, you're not learning anything.

That really stuck with me. When I get things wrong - especially in areas I consider myself knowledgeable about - what I try to do is focus not on what I failed to do (be right), but what I did do (learn something).

I give myself props for having the humility to accept my human limitations, and the courage to transcend my current knowledge. I celebrate it (see the #MeaCulpa tag).

A while back someone told me an electric car was not a car, because it doesn't have a carburetor. So you have to call it an EV. I took him at his word. Then I was on a train and I said something to another passenger about the train car we were in. And I thought;

Maybe the word "car" isn't short for "carburetor", maybe it's short for "carriage"? So I checked. Yup;

Was that EV geek messing with me, or did it never occur to him?

Me:
> Stalin only joined WW2 because the Nazis had the hubris to attack the USSR

As I learned sometime after this, from Snyder's Yale lectures about the history of Ukraine, Stalin actually helped Hitler *start* WW2 by invading Poland with him, and occupying a big chunk of it. Strange that this isn't part of the popular narrative if WW2 history.

But my comment here is still fair if applied only to why they started fighting the Nazis.

Replied to Strypey

I feel like I owe Eddie Vedder and PJ a public apology. I'm sure they'd understand, if they knew, but when I listened through their discography recently, I posted some fairly dismissive comments about their more recent albums. At the time I was frustrated and angry with the world, and I wanted music that spoke to that, like Ten, and Vs, and Riot Act.

#MeaCulpa Full disclosure of a very dubious ancestor. Made his fortune as a 'tax collector' (sic. 'enforcer') in #tamil_nadu (formerly #Madras #State) #Sth_India. Returned home having 'made' his fortune working for the #East_India Company. Yes, slaves, sugar, tea, coffee, spices etc. The 'family' once owned much of #South #Devon, from Haldon Ridge to #Torquay & the toll road to #Plymouth (A30). I know 'unto the 7th generation' but still a weight I carry.

💉👶 #Impfung #Gesundheit #Kinderschutz #Masern #Diphtherie #newz

@serapath
> nostr only relies on websockets (wss)

You're correct, my mistake. #MeaCulpa

According to Wikipedia, WSS is ...

"... a living standard maintained by the WHATWG and a successor to The WebSocket API from the W3C."

So it began as a W3C standard, but was forked to maintain it's integrity. Which is exactly what we can and will do with AP, if there's any reason to think standardisation at W3C will compromise it.
