Dear #lazyweb

I have a copy of "Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets" and it says it should be your second book on C programming. Bracketing the K&R C bible which is out of print, what do you recommend a persons first book be on the C language?

I am specifically interested in doing low level stuff like writing a compiler and understanding how to abuse embedded systems. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Chop saw recos: I was thinking of getting a DeWalt sliding compound miter saw with a stand. The only downside is it’s deep AF when fully deployed. It would be nice to have the deeper cut capacity since I don’t (yet) have a table saw. Thoughts / comments / experience welcome. Thanks!

is there one word or easy phrase to describe a profession or a career path where:

a boy leaves school, keen craftsman, starts an apprenticeship, becomes a master saddler - pivots to chandler of equine supplies (as his hands need a change of scene)

This SC is KristalClear's dad

his professional title can be real or creative

I'm also trying try to come up with a word or a phrase myself

Dear #lazyweb, what is the best way you know to represent #tagged #enums in #Python? It needs to be at least somewhat type-checkable, although it's possible I might settle for something like enumerating each value's associated data type/tuple once again for mypy to see.

So far I've been using a hierarchy of frozen dataclasses and then a single-dispatch handler; however, now I have a possible use case with the need for validation, and the hierarchy of dataclasses is not discoverable, thus not, well, enumerable :)

when writing teenage fiction, how many words in a chapter are:

too few?

too many?

It's all fluid, but currently I have as few as 1800, and as many as 4600. There is sufficient scope to split or combine some of the work that's already been done, without disturbing the natural flow of the material.

(and thinking about density, how many words per page? I have no constraints on the dimensions of the book, or the cost of having it printed)

Currently feeling overwhelmed with all my projects. I am lacking overview and everything feels blocked.

Does someone have recommendations for tools/workflows to structure personal projects? Usually my attempts to structure myself fail to become habits, because I forget to use the tool/workflow. But I am willing to look into any recommendations.

Thanks in advance. 🙏

Anybody have a fail2ban or other solution for blocking scraping in Nginx config? Asking for a friend who is tired of getting excessive CPU warnings from assholes scraping his git forge...

ETA: anubis.techaro.lol/ has been recommended multiple times, so maybe check that out if you're looking for a solution.

I remember as a child seeing a documentary about one of the most idiotic projects that the Nazis did:

Some of their senior leadership so firmly believed the Hollow Earth theory that they set up a V2 launcher on a South Pacific island with a view of slingshotting missiles around the Sun and landing them anywhere in Europe or America. It turns out the Sun isn't in the middle of the Earth (who knew?!?) so this didn't work.

It came to mind because another government seems to have a similar attitude to science at the moment.

I can find no online references to this at all. Did the documentary maker make the whole thing up? Did I dream the documentary?

EDIT: we put the "30mm or so of copper" back on (which I had pegged as bluetooth ant) and GPS works now.

Oh #electronics #lazyweb, I have an #askfedi - I'm looking at a garmin gps watch (instinct 2s) it's not getting GPS. We think the GPS antenna has been damaged, thing is I'm not even sure which part is the GPS antenna. There's a couple of things that look like antennas put they're just 30mm or so of copper. I thought a gps antenna hadda be more complicated than that?. Anyone know of a teardown article or vid on garmins, or some tech doco?

Dear #lazyweb does anyone know how this navigational marker should be tagged in #openstreetmap? I've been going through the wiki and I can find how navigational buoys are tagged but so far nothing for land based marine navigation aids. I believe the marker lines up with the inland lighthouse.
