Labor Notes · In Italy, Immigrant Workers Launch a Wave of Strikes for a 40-Hour WeekSince early April, immigrant workers in the Tuscan city of Prato have staged a wave of strikes demanding their right to a 40-hour work week, or “8x5.” Organized by the union SUDD Cobas, these walkouts, dubbed “Strike Days,” have directly involved 70 textile and garment factories in Europe’s biggest textile manufacturing hub. Highly successful, these simultaneous strikes have now won “8x5”—eight hour days, five days a week—in 68 fashion workshops and warehouses, all within the span of 14 weeks.
I see trade unions as the cutting edge of the labour movement because workers hold the real power in the economic sphere; we create all the wealth that society depends on.
Through our organised strength in unions, we can directly challenge the capitalist system and the state, both of which exploit and oppress us. I believe in workers’ self-management and solidarity, and that by building strong, federated unions based on direct action like strikes and workplace control, we prepare ourselves not only to improve our immediate conditions but to ultimately abolish wage slavery, capitalism, and the state itself.
In other words, our unions are the foundation for a new society where workers truly run the economy and make decisions democratically, without bosses or politicians standing above us.

Victory in bogus self employment case!
Piercer who was let go with no employers tax paid, has won her case at the WRC, to be recognised as an employee and compensated as such.
Though she was nervous about her tax situation, this FW faced her fears and reached out to the union for help, support and advice.
