All the farm fresh harvest foods that we gave away to folks who attended the annual #LifeCycles #CommunitySharing day are from local farmers who donated excess harvests & from gleaning volunteers. We gifted hundreds of dollars worth of fruits & vegetables at the event today. Excess fruits & vegetables are going to rest of our volunteers & to Mustard Seed Community Food Distribution centre - located beside LifeCycles HQ, in industrial Esquimalt area.

I'll be with the LifeCycles crew at #CommunitySharing day at #WellandCommunityOrchard today 🍏🍎🍐🍑🍇

Our annual Community Sharing Day is our way to celebrate the urban orchard, as well as distribute extra fruit at the peak of the season! We will have activities including tasting heritage apple varieties, a scavenger hunt, orchard tours, cider pressing, asking a fruit tree expert and of course there will be fruit to take home.

We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!

At all of our #FruitTrees assessments, we have to take some specific reference photos, to make things easier for our volunteer fruit picker teams. Full photo of tree & area it's located in yards. Photo of fruit cut in half - to help us determine when they're ready to be picked. Photo of fruits on tree. Photo of access to yard/fruit trees. I took several reference photos during our morning field training trip.

I've volunteered at past work parties at #WellandCommunityOrchard in the past.

This Sunday, I'm taking Mom there for a Summer trees pruning workshop. It's free for seniors & disabled folks to attend 🙂

Gather, harvest, and learn at one of the largest and most diverse #CommunityOrchards in #Canada. Once the backyard of local #conservationist Rex Welland, the #orchard is home to nearly 200 #FruitTrees and vines, including many rare varieties of apple, pear, plum, fig, grape, hazelnut, kiwi, paw paw, and more.
It was Rex’s vision to have his land loved, used, and #stewarded by the public, and since 2013 we’ve been working with the Town of #ViewRoyal to turn the orchard into a #CommunityResource.
