Redistricting is only supposed to occur once every 10 years after the #Census is completed and results are turned in. So, it's not just Texas Republicans breaking with consensus and pushing this through despite the absence of a quorum within their legislature since Democrats absconded (for their own reasons which many Texan residents consider to be good ones).
There's a reason that past generations came up with the word #gerrymandering, which actually is a bad name for the act of redistricting. All of this sucks! The history behind redistricting and what they're now trying to do in the Texas Legislature is really grotesque. I have read what happened to poorer black folks in South Carolina during the Post-Reconstruction era who were just trying to vote. During the 1880's the boards of commissioners minimized black peoples' voting demographics by targeting their area (they changed the size/boundary of districts where African Americans lived and were also the voting majority) while at the same time they strategically adjusted vote counts within the whites' voting enclaves so that wealthier, white South Carolinians would receive a few more votes. After proving ineffective in the role of Health Minister, Shane Reti wearing his 'Statistics Minister' hat is lauding Stats NZ's plan to kill off the NZ census in favour of "administrative data from government agencies". Reti cites the UK as an example of what they're trying to achieve.
So how's it going in the UK? Whoops! They're on the verge of abandoning the reform, with leading academics and statisticians warning the approach “risks an increasingly fragmented and inaccurate data landscape”, describing the government’s plans as “wishful thinking”.
NZ's 2023 Census cost $325m. Luxon's losers have only budgeted $227m for the 2030 Census. They've grabbed $100m to feed their tax cuts for the rich. That's their main motivation for "reform".
Reflections in H2O that is a favorite subject of mine. This however is just a reflection in glass.

I kinda don’t want to participate in part 2 of the US Census.
They’ve been calling, sent FedEx deliveries and even had a US Census agent drop by the house.
But I don’t feel right, knowing they cannot protect citizen data as they claim they can from Musk and his posse.
I wonder if this isn’t the point though - to erode trust?
Probably it’s just an added benefit.
