A major part of why New Zealand has bad infrastructure is the political culture is highly sensitive to capital expenditures and generally ignorant of operational expenditures. We can see this in the ferries - Everything is about reducing CapEx in the port. The implications of smaller vessels and outmoded infrastructure on OpEx just aren’t being considered.

Oh, and can Labour please shut up about “hard working families”. Single people also have problems, and I tire of political messaging that ignores us.

How does Hipkins expect to be elected if he isn’t willing to stand by the decisions of the previous government? These comments on the ferries are like the policy bonfire all over again. He looks weak.
