So here is something I have learned about how shitty regional cellular network in #Australia is.

The base station connection gets dumped when the number of channels gets saturated.

Oldest connections get dumped first.

There are subtle differences between business and personal cell phones... And that is one of those that you don't know exists, or will be told about until you hit your head against it.

Anyone know of a reliable, cheap cell phone carrier in the US? I have an ancient AT&T prepaid plan that doesn't have data, (it used to be Cingular,) and my money is finally running out. So I'm in the market for something new. I'd like unlimited talk and text, (texts are what burned $500 of prepaid minutes out in 16 months,) and some data. I'd prefer less than $10USD/month.

I used US Mobile abroad and enjoyed them. They have a limited plan at $8/month if you pay for a year. Are they good in this country?

Can you recommend any others to look at?

thanks.

Ok...My super hacky remote computer commbox.
Basically an old phone, with various basic mods (scheduled reboot, timer charge, remote management).

The purpose, a stand alone, remote computer you're not going to miss too much when someone fucks it.
You can even drill a hole in the casing for the camera surveillance (not the purpose of this one).
It looks semi "I belong there").
Lid goes on top.
I may need to put a sun shield on it for summer.

If you're looking for a cell plan in Canada, I've been with Public Mobile, ‘discount Telus’, for years and am happy with their service. This is my referral link. You get a $10 credit and I get a "point”.

Their website is minimalist and good. Telus’ network is reliable and widespread (uses Bell elsewhere). You can order a SIM/eSIM online.

I have 40GB 5G for $35/mo unlimited in Canada. They have a special for 60GB 5G Canada/US/Mexico.

There are adults today who have never known life without cell phones—more importantly, they have never experienced a world without the internet. Yet, they can witness how life unfolded through the thousands of films produced in the 20th century. This contrasts sharply with the 19th century, when only a handful of short films existed, and photography—while present—was still in its early stages. Even so, photography played a crucial role in documenting events like the American Civil War, providing invaluable historical images.

Now, 160 years after that war’s end, most of us carry a camera in our pocket, embedded in our cell phones—devices that are not only cameras but also powerful miniature computers, capable of capturing moments and connecting us in ways previous generations could never have imagined.

Okay, I got my phone back with the new battery. It works well and the phone looks brand new now. It was looking rather frightening with the swollen battery and the cracked screen protector (since removed -- I'll have to get a new screen protector). Granted, the cost of replacing it was steep ( $120 -- maybe elsewhere I could have gotten it cheaper). Hopefully it lasts. I initially bought the phone two years ago for $200; so, cost wise I figure I'm still pretty good. Anyhow, see picture of the old swollen battery.

Well, my phone is pregnant. The battery is swelling.

I went to a few shops, who said, throw it out and buy a new one. They all let me know of all the great deals I could get, especially if I signed up with so-and-so cellphone plan providers that they were promoting. "Better to end than to mend" they said (okay, no one actually quoted Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, but they should have, IMO). They also added, it's a bomb! Buy a new one now from us!

Anyway, I did find a repair (and game) shop not connected with or facilitating any of the plans from big providers, that being Gamerama. I put in a purchase of the new battery. It's on order, and Monday when they get the battery I'll take my phone to the shop and hopefully get it fixed (note, I'm typing this on the phone now, and it has not yet exploded).

It's a little late, but any reviews on the pixel 7?
I killed my s20 today and this is what the Verizon guy suggested.

I hate hate hate getting a new phone, btw. Not good with tech stuff.

I'm finding my way around it. But it's not ideal. I dislike that Google is everywhere

@JessTheUnstill One of the big fuckups for BlackBerry was just the delays in getting BlackBerry 10, plus the Z10 and Q10, to market.

I got to use BB10 for a couple of months, and it was nice. It was built on QNX, with a modern swipe/gesture based UI built with Qt.

Arguably a better OS than the iOS and Android releases at that same time.

There was a feature called the Hub, which wax a unified inbox for your email messages, social posts, and text messages. Plus a modern app store, and separate personal/work profiles built into the OS.

There was a version without a physical keyboard (Z10) and with (Q10).

The problem is they didn't start working on it until 2010, and BB10 wasn't released until 2013.

For about two years before BB10 came out, BlackBerry didn't release any new phones.

Had BB10 come out earlier, it *might* have saved the company.
