Figured we’d leave the car at home to go to Heritage Days, so we grabbed a couple of Lime scooters to take the train from Blatchford Market LRT Station. Turns out you can’t park scooters anywhere near the station.

Got off the train at Stadium and grabbed a couple other scooters. Turns out you can’t park them anywhere near Northlands, so we had to walk through half a mile of parking for cars.

What are we even doing?

"Each box contains two studio apartments, already filled with appliances like fridges, stoves, washers and dryers... 84 studio apartments across six storeys... From the starting point of manufacture to a fully-stacked building will be from April 15 to the middle of August... Each module has intensified structural elements so it can be transported to site in a safe and effective manner... It's got a huge amount of durability and longevity that can endure as much, if not more, than a traditional build... renting for under $1,100 a month." Wow!!

CBCPiece by piece, cranes lift 84 prefabricated rentals into place in downtown Calgary | CBC NewsAlong a busy street on the west end of downtown, another new rental building is going up — but instead of being built from scratch, prefabricated units are being craned into place, piece by piece.

"Value-per-acre analysis is powerful because it reveals what raw numbers often miss: how efficiently #land contributes to a community’s #financial #health. It doesn’t tell #cities what to build or where to build it. But it helps communities see which investments generate lasting #value, and which ones may quietly drain #resources over time."

"Under [Mayor Brandon] Scott, #Baltimore has fought violent crime not only through policing but through a network of programs that provide support for housing, career development, and education.... In the past, indiscriminate arrests have put more people in the justice system without reducing crime."

From ‪@keithgerein.bsky.social‬: "All told, this felt like a mayoral wannabe in meltdown... #TimCartmell has talked often about council lacking the fortitude to make hard choices. Well, here is a big one staring him in the face, and instead of standing firm on the policies he previously supported, he instead has his hand on the chicken switch at the first sign of trouble."

edmontonjournalKeith Gerein: Frustrated Cartmell was his own worst enemy during council's hearing on Edmonton infillEdmonton mayoral candidate Tim Cartmell pitched a partial infill ban that went nowhere, then missed a key city council vote on limiting impacts to neighbourhoods

@mplsfietser.bike And the article has another added problem, a view held by adults who drive, which is characterizing childrens' use of #bikes as a "pastime," rather than as a way for even a youngster to be independent as they go to a job, or to school, or to visit a friend--ie, as necessary transportation! I sense this opinion also bleeding out into a ready dismissal of adults who bike: "certainly they must be playing at it!!" 😦

"Roughly three-quarters of #Austrians fall under the income threshold, meaning many middle-class families can get geared-to-income #housing, too, with rents capped at a reasonable 25% of income. The diverse mix of tenants means there is little stigma attached to #subsidized housing; it also keeps neighbourhoods diverse and ensures #urban housing is available for vital workers like nurses, sanitation workers and bus drivers."

CBCAustria took the stigma out of social housing. Yes, this is the right way to go: "The council report, which is public, notes that the updated standards will require collector roadways (those connecting local streets to arterial roads) to have traffic-calming measures and a shared-use path on one side."
