Tristan :ms_bisexual_flag:<p>Excellent, and rather worrying, blog from Carole Cadwalladr. An investigative journalist who I greatly admire. Best known for exposing some of the darker powers behind Brexit, and being greatly punished as a result: </p><p>'In 2016, I stumbled on a story about social media, data and ‘fake news’. That led me on a fantastical journalistic journey that turned into the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal and a long-running investigation into Trump, Brexit and Russia. This was a story that was so far above my pay grade, it was unreal. I kept on hoping for a crack team of investigative reporters of the type that you see in the movies to turn up. They never did.</p><p>The one big lesson I learned was that investigative journalism = journalism + time. Keeping going is the key. I’m hoping that this newsletter will help in the mission. Seth Lloyd describes to Robert Lawrence Huhn some of the puzzling aspects of a #Quantum #Observer. [4th in a #series]

❛❛ Does the #concept of #observation have deep relevance in fundamental physics? What about in #QuantumPhysics where some kind of observation seems to be needed to transform #WaveFunction probabilities into actual events? ❜❜ 12-min.

“Can you imagine the number of #Guardian or #Observer journalists over the years who’ve been ringing #ScotlandYard about a story that isn’t really in their [the #police’s favour]? What I suspect is that that the same thing has happened to them in order to find the sources.

The Guardian · Journalists who were unlawfully spied on have ‘no doubt’ UK reporters are still targetedBy Haroon Siddique

Nearly 500 journalists are on strike at the #Guardian and its sister paper, the Sunday-only #Observer, to protest the planned sale of the Observer to a small digital startup.

"We believe it's a total betrayal of the Guardian's values and promises that it's made," says #Carole #Cadwalladr, an investigative reporter and feature writer for the Observer.

"The sale of the Observer to a loss-making startup is potentially the death of this historic brand."

The strike, which started Wednesday, is expected to last for two days this week and restart for a couple more days next week.

Cadwalldr says the strike is intended to convince the Observer's owner to slow down a process that the paper's union says is sprinting to a preordained conclusion.

She says colleagues believe other suitors could emerge if further review shows the Guardian should divest itself of the Sunday paper.

The Observer is a storied liberal title whose first issue came out on this date in 1791.

It is believed to be the world's oldest Sunday paper.

Its famous journalists include George Orwell. And it was central to the launch of the human rights group Amnesty International.

The buyer is #Tortoise #Media, a well-regarded but small news outlet founded in 2019
and led by #James #Harding, the former director of BBC News and editor of The Times of London.

Its tagline is "slow down, wise up."

It promises to delve into what's driving the news rather than simply post the latest headlines.

It has not yet turned a profit but has deep-pocketed backers,
including the investment arm of the Thomson family that controls Reuters and owns the Globe and Mail newspaper in Canada.

strike, UK journalism, TERFs

Heads up: the #Guardian and the #Observer are both full of TERFs and have played, and continue to play, key roles in stoking the UK's transphobic panic. So do whatever the fuck you want on December 5 and 6 because UK journalism does not deserve to survive.

(I'm seeing unsourced and usually no-alt-texted screenshots asking people not to share stories from those outlets. I am not going to do people's work for them.)
