I guess some good news: somehow all the weather things are now pointing to the same place, at least. The “AI summary” is completely useless, though, even if it’s done entirely on device.
I just… want a nice phone with a great camera. I’m tired of all of this other stuff.
I’m tempted to try out Lineage or Graphene right out of the gate.
The classic Google “duplicate all the things until you kill off the older, more loved thing” strategy is in full force with Pixel 9.
There are somehow three weather apps depending on how you get to it. There are two assistants and I never know which is going to pop up (sometimes they pop up over top of one another!). I have a Pixel Screenshots app which is somehow different from the Screenshots shortcut from the Photos app, where my screenshots are synced to my account.
I got my hands on a Pixel 9 Pro today, and… it is *substantially* bigger and heavier than Pixel 8. :( I thought it might be negligible but I think Pixel 8 is _already_ too big, so every little bit bigger and heavier makes a huge difference.
I appreciate that the “smaller” phone got the same guts and camera as the bigger pro phone, but sheesh. It’s still too damn big. :(
Do I get a phone case I like the look of and throw a third-party magnet ring on the back, get a boring-looking case with magnets, or just put a magnet ring on the phone itself?
Specifically looking for the Pixel 9 Pro (non-XL). The bright red Mous one I really wanted is only available for the XL.
Free idea for any tech press/blogger/etc. who wants to stand out from the typical noise around consumer tech:
Write a “review” about the Pixel 9 in two parts: the first half, exclusively use Google’s AI models for your information, sources, fact checking, illustrations, and even drafting if you want. Then in the second half, break down how well (…or not) it did, share how the process was, and correct any of the factual errors.
The Pixel Screenshots app is weird, and classic Google. This should be part of Google Photos and/or Keep—not a separate app!
Is this a symptom of the “Pixel” team being too separated from the other product teams, or is it to combat privacy concerns (which, let’s be honest, it won’t because some people will just not trust anything from Google)?

It’s fair to say that we knew a lot of what Google was going to be announcing today at its Made By Google event, thanks to multiple massive leaks over recent weeks and months, but the Pixel line-up for the next 12 months is now official. As well as a four-strong Pixel 9 line up, Google also confirmed the Pixel Watch 3 and the Pixel Buds Pro 2, plus introduced its new AI chatbot, Gemini Live.
Tom's Guide has made this Storyboard for the event, which includes full details on all the announcements, as well as some hands-on first impressions. Take a look here.
Boo, no Qi2 (basically, standardized MagSafe) with Pixel 9?
#MadeByGoogle is now trending across Mastodon
Maybe it's just me, but reading a bulleted list summarization is not faster than looking at visualizations of the same information.
Still personally disappointed to see them going with the fold form factor instead of the flip form factor.
Improved fingerprint unlock is good. It was frustratingly slow when I last had a Pixel.
Okay this should not be a big deal, but Google demoed new voices and the first one was a Black-coded feminine-sounding voice, and another sounded androgynous/non-binary if that makes sense??
I’m mostly just happy thinking about the future of not having “the Google lady” being a thing. These voices are pretty incredible, and it’s hard not to get excited about some of this tech.
Not a fan of the new camera bumps. But don't mind that they go most of the way across.
On to Pixel 9! Strap in for more Gemini.
