After weeks away, I finally completed 2026 with V-Varen Nagasaki.

And we had a lot of injuries, but I feel I've reached my upper ceiling as a player. I even won my 200th game, but a run of no wins in the last six, meant we only finished sixth in J1 - our 'worst' finish yet, but one the real club would no doubt dream of.

Nonetheless the first message of fan unrest at results came at the end of the season.

We also went out relatively early in both domestic cups, but in the Asian Champions League, not only did we come through qualifying, we had an incredible run to top the group with five straight wins - including 6-3 over Shanghai Shenhua, and winning in South Korea against Jeonbuk Motors. We will play FC Seoul in the first knockout round.

We also brought in more players to add numbers for 2027 - including 'keeper Masato Sugiyama from Sanfrecce Hiroshima, after our long-time #1 Go Hatano spent weeks injured.

The final 2026 J1 League table saw Kashima Antlers dominate, only losing twice on the way to 82 points, finishing seven points clear of Vissel Kobe, with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo the other Champions League qualifier, ahead of Urawa Reds by goal difference. After an awful run, V-Varen Nagasaki came in in sixth place, 19 points off the top with 63.
Despite the many injuries during the season, we were in the run for making it back to the Asian Champions League, until an awful final six matches, where we drew four and lost the other two. We did still get three ACL wins to qualify first from our group - before losing to Jeonbuk at home, as we went without scoring in our final three matches.
Our Asian Champions League saw us need to qualify for the group stage, but when we made it through, five wins in a row saw us end up top of the group, qualifying for a knockout round match with FC Seoul. Our last loss also helped fellow Korean club Jeonbuk Motors qualifying as a best runner-up.
A list of our main transfers in and out during the 2026 season, and 2027 pre-season so far, with Masato Sugiyama joining from Sanfrecce Hiroshima for up to £1.3 million, after coming on loan mid-season, and Ali Jassim, Choi Jun-Young, Matias Abaldo and Kang Hyun-Muk in 2026, and Toki Yukutomo for £2.6 million from Kashiwa Reysol in the pre-season our transfers in.
