It’s important, when you’re making graphs, to think about the story you want to tell with the data, and what type of graph, and what features of the graph, will help you tell that story.

Likewise, when you’re looking at someone else’s graph, we all need to apply that critical data literacy and look at the scale on the y axis, as well as checking the labels, finding out the origin of the data, and considering whether the graph is accurate, a valid way to display that data, and what story it might be trying to tell you.

Here's my first contribution to the #30DayChartChallenge 2025. Horrifying statistics about misinformation! But also hot tips to cope!

Four in five of us (adults in Australia) reckon: "The spread of misinformation on social media needs to be addressed."

And that "People need to be taught how to identify misinformation."

So we're starting there! This is the SIFT method:

S: Stop. Don't read a post until you know where the info is coming from. And stop if you're overwhelmed.

I: Investigate the source. Maybe hover over their social media profile. See what Wikipedia says.

F: Find better coverage. Before sharing, check if other websites (reputable ones) say the same thing.

T: Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context. Check the date. Try reverse image search to see where pics came from. Read full quotes, not just ragebait headlines.

📣Heute und morgen findet an der Hochschule Darmstadt ein OER-Vernetzungsworkshop der geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen NFDI-Konsortien, Datenkompetenzzentren und der Data Literacy Alliance (DALIA) statt.

➡️Ziel des Workshops ist es mit Fokus auf Data-Literacy- und FDM-Lehr-Lernmaterialien
Gemeinsamkeiten in den Arbeitsprogrammen zu identifizieren und eine Grundlage für eine gemeinsame Abstimmung zu schaffen.

Am 8. November gibt es in #Bielefeld an der Uni eine spannende Veranstaltung. Da spricht Leena Simon @reticuleena zum Thema "Digitale Mündigkeit". Danach gibt es ein Podium u. a. mit Dan Verständig (@danvers). Das ist die Abschlussveranstaltung zum "#DataLiteracy"- Verbundprojekt, an dem ich auch bis September mitgewirkt habe. Bin sehr gespannt und freue mich darauf - ich moderiere das nämlich :)
