The biggest one is my wife and I are certainly not giving birth to new people. I got my vasectomy a year ago.
To delay collapse I:
- sold my car
- use public transit
- eat only plants
- refuse to fly in a plane
Additionally my wife and I are trying to live in the moment, acknowledging that these are the best years we'll get.
@nm The top 3 most effective personal choices for the planet have to do with kids, food, and cars.
People get overwhelmed with "50 Simple Things To Do" lists and end up doing nothing.
It is better to do the fewer, but more effective things.
The Union Of Concerned Scientists used to have a book ( now hopelessly out of date ) where they listed what the most *effective* eco-friendly personal choices are.
Most sustainable impact:
1. I went from religious meat eater to 100% strict vegan within a day and this had the biggest impact.
2. Another good thing is to read about minimalism and don't be a victim of consumerism. Install an Ad-Blocker (#ublockorigin) and get rid of all the stuff you bought, because you needed a dopamine shot, which only last for a few minutes, but the crap stays and you might pay rent to store all this crap.
But it's important not to throw away everything, sell or donate it, that's much more sustainable. Even if you can only sell something for 1,- EUR on Ebay, do it. Every piece, which will not be in your home, will be a relief.
Only keep stuff, which sparks joy (and yes, try the #konmari method)
And it makes a lot of fun creating an Ebay auction in a break or if you need a task, which doesn't need a lot of brain power. Creating 1-3 auctions a day could be a cool habit.
3. Buy used things: It took me a while to lose disgust to wear cloths other people already wore. But today I like visiting second hand shops and that's what I really like to do if I visit other countries/cities.
I even like it to give old hardware a new life. I flash newest (custom) firmware on old smartphones. My current phone is a #samsunggalaxys5 which is about 10 years old and it works flawlessly.
And I built up a passion for restoring old video game consoles. Especially #gameboy and #snes but I need to learn more about electronics, because sometimes the defect isn't obvious. But it's hard to figure out good sources to learn this power.
4. Stop using Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc. can reduce the CO2 output, because everything what collects data, costs a lot of energy and then the data must be processed and then it gets sold and the data gets processed somewhere else. An Ad-Blocker (see above) can block those spywares, too.
If you watch videos: Watching videos in 480p is enough and can reduce energy consumption.
5. The last weeks I read a lot of books about #zerowaste and can find a lot of inspirations, which can be used directly without even putting a lot of energy into it, but which have a huge impact.
@nm
1. Avoiding it by (hopefully) dying before it happens, also by living on a mountain in an area with a lot of available water sources (so far).
2. Trying to help by never using animal products*, never having children* and (hopefully soon) switching to solar power and an electric car.
*I decided to do these things long before I realized they'd be aligned with having a smaller footprint, it's just a (good) coincidence.
@beforewisdom @nm No, but I do consider myself to be a level-5 vegan. I got special dispensation from the vegan police since most of my clothes don't have pockets.
@beforewisdom @nm Never stops being funny.
What about carrying top soil in a fanny pack?
@beforewisdom @nm Then I'd be in trouble with the fashion police.
@MelissaRatisher @nm Unless you become a trend setter.
@beforewisdom @nm Even **I** am not cool enough to pull off a fanny pack. Hard pass.
