a friend made a good point.

encryption isn't what gets people entraped by the state. it's user error. humans are the ones that make the mistake, not encryption algos.

however, when a once trusted service starts to licking fascism boots, maybe it's time to dust off and use PGP again.

PGP is a chore, but is platform agnostic and it just works.

@lockshock that is an extremely load-bearing "just." You can't brush aside user error which includes setting up the initial keys which have a bewildering number of non-intuitive options with poor defaults

Grackle, the antifascist

@hakan_geijer i appreciate how you approach folks with your replies.

i do think i need to step away from terms like "just" because, as you said, it does carry weight, especially without proper context. I thought my pretext of it being a chore aluded to that weight.

my thought was "it just works" once keys are established and users at both ends are educated on how to properly use. obviously, i was wrong with that particular statement.

@lockshock I would still somewhat disagree with how easy PGP is to use. I've been using it from the CLI and via app extensions for over a decade, and I don't trust myself to get the incantations right. always checking bash history or every GUI toggle to make sure things are right. Signal by comparison just works assuming we input contact details correctly and scanned the fingerprint QR codes. I would call myself something close to an expert and gpg makes me nervous as frick

@lockshock also loo sometimes my replies are definitely too snarky or rude so glad at least sometimes they're well received

@hakan_geijer i'm sure many of us can appear snarky and/or rude in replies every now and then. even if that's the case, if the reply is valid, it's valid. it's amazing how text messages don't convey the emotion behind it.

@hakan_geijer i stopped using pgp about a decade ago bc easier things came along,,,, so yet another tick against me. tech changes rapidly and i'm very much out of touch with pgp. and i just need to choose my words wisely, which i fail sometimes..err often. i'm good with receiving feedback when it's valid.
