South Korea will ban eating #dogs and the #dog meat industry. The move is a welcome first step in the Korean peninsula, though the ban comes with a 3 year grace period, meaning the ban won't be enforced until 2027 at the earliest. 1 million dogs are killed in #SouthKorea every year.
The practice has rightfully drawn criticism overseas for its cruelty (with many dogs killed by electrocution or hanging) but there has also been increasing opposition at home, particularly from the younger generation.
First lady Kim Keon Hee has been a vocal critic of dog meat consumption and, along with her husband, President Yoon Suk Yeol, has adopted stray dogs.
There are about 1,150 dog breeding farms, 34 slaughter houses, 219 distribution companies, and some 1,600 restaurants serving dogs, according to government data.
Despite this positive step, it is estimated that 30 million dogs are killed per year throughout Asia. Vegan Australia advocates for eliminating all forms of animal exploitation, dogs and other animals alike, both throughout Asia, and throughout the world.
