N-gated Hacker News<p>🚀💸 Hurrah! The "public" Internet is "saved" again by 42 projects that received <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/funding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funding</span></a> to reclaim it from... well, something or other. In a twist of fate, a bunch of geeks with hex stickers think throwing money at code will magically fix the web. 😂🌐<br><a href="https://nlnet.nl/news/2025/20250422-announcement-grants-CommonsFund.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nlnet.nl/news/2025/20250422-an</span><span class="invisible">nouncement-grants-CommonsFund.html</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/publicInternet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>publicInternet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/techprojects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>techprojects</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/webdevelopment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>webdevelopment</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/reclaimtheweb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reclaimtheweb</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HackerNews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HackerNews</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ngated" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ngated</span></a></p>

Petter Naslund<p>I've started working on an interactive dashboard for <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> ! 🏠✨</p><p>Lights turn on and off with a simple tap, and the dashboard view updates in real-time. It's amazing to see it all come together!</p><p>My plan is to mount an old tablet on the wall and use it as a control panel for my smart home. It took some time to learn how to use SweetHome3D for the renders, but I'm really happy with the results so far!</p><p>Next up, I'll be polishing the design to ensure it looks great on phones, tablets, and PCs. </p><p>Any tips or features you think I should add? </p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/SmartHome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartHome</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/TechProjects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechProjects</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/HomeAutomation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAutomation</span></a></p>
Christine Sætre-esque<p>“Small projects rule.” I’ve learned this over and over. And over. </p><p>1 - Salient engineering and design details matter in small projects. Big projects would rather talk about the budget.</p><p>2 - Small projects seem to allow CIO/CTO’s (and the project manager) to adopt a listen and learn approach. Big projects show less respect, wrestling or controlling the technical team rather than supporting their moves.</p><p>3 - Coordination and communication complexity and friction is lower in a small project. </p><p>And that last one REALLY matters.</p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/failures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>failures</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/retrospective" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrospective</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/TechProjects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechProjects</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/engineering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>engineering</span></a></p>
Christine Sætre-esque<p>This is my first time, but apparently tech project failure is now normal. Yikes.</p><p>“The new failure normal is now officially the technology business, and, for some inexplicable reason, hope always springs eternal. Maybe it’s because the consequences of failure are so small.” (Forbes)</p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/TechProjects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechProjects</span></a> <br><a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/steveandriole/2021/03/25/3-main-reasons-why-big-technology-projects-fail---why-many-companies-should-just-never-do-them/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">forbes.com/sites/steveandriole</span><span class="invisible">/2021/03/25/3-main-reasons-why-big-technology-projects-fail---why-many-companies-should-just-never-do-them/</span></a></p>
