I’ve just mended a well loved (and worn) merino alpine technical hoodie (holes and failing seams), with red sashiko thread and old wool socks (themselves with holes beyond repair).

It took me some time to remember how to properly do the « blanket stitch » :) but it was the right choice (elasticity, edge management, aesthetics).

Pretty pleased with the result, we’ll see how it holds!

Patched my husband's jeans with some #sashiko style #mending.
I'm interested to see how it holds up in the laundry. Worst case, I'll get to try another type of stitch and see.
I have yet to rinse away the grid guidelines I drew onto it, but they will vanish in water.
I tried to choose a playful color and a pattern that isn't too flashy, but which also provides some strength.

I'm doing some of my "follow the instructions for a change" #Sashiko, and came upon a bit that I think means I can't do everything that's left without a lot of stopping and starting.

Then I realised I have an actual graph theorist in the house who might see something I'd missed.

So I checked with @ColinTheMathmo, and he did spot something I'd missed, but it confirmed the impossibility.

I'll have to fudge it...

👍 I just learned something new on the internet.

The way clothes are repaired here in our house has a name, it's called

Sashiko, it is the Japanese art of visible mending.

Just that you know it, and you can be hip as well by using a Japanese word when you show your repaired trousers. 😂

Photo of a person seen on the back. The person is wearing repaired jeans. Various patches are applied and no effort is taken to make the repairs invisible, on the contrary various other-coloured patches are used besides yarn of a totally different colour.

Here is the quilt I just finished, titled 'Because She Changes', inspired by the monumental public sculpture 'She Changes', by Janet Echelman, in Matosinhos, Portugal.

Selvedge denim both sides
Vintage silk embroidery threads
Cotton sashiko threads
Red linen border

2m x 1.5m

Every stitch hand-sewn.

Visible mending: Someone on my street put out a pair of jeans with a hole in the butt. I picked them up thinking I might be able to repurpose the denim. But they fit me perfectly. So I gave visible mending a try.

The patch is loosely based on sashiko embroidery. Except I wanted colours. And I realize now I didn't do the edges right.

But I'm happy with the result.

My husband says I need to wear out the jeans in more places, so I can expand on it.

I think I seriously underestimated the amount of thread needed to put #sashiko on about half the surface of a pair of jeans. Running out of white. At least this white. I have some polyester whites too, will maybe switch to that or find another color. And in the spirit of sashiko embroidery, I'm NOT buying anything for it. It's a repair (well, and half of it just decoration), it was historically done to save money, not splurge on overpriced threads. I have about two-three bags full of threads that some are from grandma, not useable for much actual embroidering I do nowadays, they should do.

(if anybody still remembers that jeans some people followed me for, that's the one it's for)
