Nielso<p>Simulating analog (🧵 )</p><p>I think it was the <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Roland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Roland</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/SH101" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SH101</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/synthesizer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>synthesizer</span></a> I had owned once that could do a quite fancy <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/SquareWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SquareWave</span></a> sound. It was hollow as hell, but powerful, too. At least I remember it this way.</p><p>Year 2025. Now enter <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/vcvRack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vcvRack</span></a> – wondering once again, why software instruments just don't sound analog to me and don't feel “right” to me… there's one obvious thing: Digital is too perfect. </p><p>So I bought <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/vcvHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vcvHost</span></a>, which allows you to patch <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/VST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VST</span></a> plugins into your virtual <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/modular" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>modular</span></a>. I then inserted a <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/TapeSaturation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TapeSaturation</span></a> plugin by <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Voxengo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Voxengo</span></a> right after the oscillator. (This is a Windows VST which I run via <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/LinVST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinVST</span></a>, it does work in <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/VCV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VCV</span></a> on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>!) </p><p>Does it sound more analog? Not sure. Do I like the sound more? For sure.</p><p>Also note this patch is using the <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Doepfer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Doepfer</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Wasp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wasp</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/VCF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VCF</span></a>, which I consider a decent emulation of an analog filter. (The patch otherwise is a classic mono synth plus chorus, delay, reverb and LFO amplitude controlled via mod wheel.)</p>
