On a beaucoup ergoté et discouru sur les méfaits de l’argent. On l’a stigmatisé comme le séducteur et le corrupteur par excellence. Que n’obtient-on avec cet ardent métal — ou plutôt avec ces billets assez ternes dont les derniers mis en circulation ne brillent pas par leur esthétisme ? Avec de l’argent on achète les consciences, selon un cliché bien connu, c’est-à-dire qu’on arrive à faire dire ou écrire à maints écrivains ou orateurs le contraire de leur pensée ou de leur opinion. L’« à droite » se mue en « à gauche », le partisan des systèmes totalitaires se transforme en un farouche anti-totalitariste, l’incroyant en croyant, le révolté en chien de garde de tel ou tel capitaliste (...) Pour de l’argent, le politicien renie volontiers ses promesses, on ne le sait que trop. Et nous savons aussi qu’il est des contrées où l’on n’évalue l’individu qu’en fonction de son compte en banque...
