Luna CorbdenIf I'm working on a complex order of ideas or events in a long section, say the complicated 3-chapter arc I recently wrote for this project, I use various non-standard characters to organize.This arc had 4-5 thematic beats I wanted to track, to make sure I wasn't repeating myself or getting the emphasis in the wrong order. So I made a separate reference note (Scrivener is great for this) with a key, something like:^ - Rebirth thread % - Patriarchal abuses of power # - Female energyThen I marked the places in the source material that emphasized these themes. When I wrote them, I marked the text where those themes went.So regardless of the *story* beats, which were different than, but tied to, the thematic beats, I wouldn't get lost. Luna CorbdenAnother tip:I used square brackets for marking things that are not final, for whatever reason.[For inline comments.][For brainstorming what goes in a place, trying out different wordings or organizing/outlining larger thoughts.]For when I [need/want] to [decide/choose] which word to use and [indicate/signal] the need to use a [thesaurus/dictionary] without breaking flow of thought or [].Also for when I realize I've repeated a word or idea but don't [want to break the flow of thought] to fix it yet.The brackets are easy to both search and visually see. A finished document has no square brackets, so editing becomes a process of finding the square brackets.The only time this is ambiguous is the function of square brackets in direct quotes. Those will stay in the final. Mx. Luna CorbdenOne tip for working with any long document in any editor, btw.If I need to move elsewhere in the doc, or suspect my editor will move me by itself, I mark it with ***. This combo of characters is easy to type, but also not likely to be used for anything else. Luna CorbdenOne of the best writing exercises I ever did was in college.We were asked to distill a 10 page scientific paper on the relation between the dodo and a plant that went extinct along with it... into 100 words.That plus the 10% Solution by Ken Rand are deeply ingrained.Really helpful as I summarize these book chapters into a proposal. 150 words per chapter?
