Asakiyume<p>She's in Tokyo, and her local tenmangu shrine (shrine to Tenjin--Michizane in god-mode) is having its uso-kae later this month. She'll take hers along and exchange it! Asakiyume<p>The uso are carved in a stylized manner: a cylinder of wood, with a deep notch in it, then painted with a pattern of the bird's colors. Here's one that one of my Japan-living offspring made: </p><p>(5/x)</p><p><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Japan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Japan</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/traditions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>traditions</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/uso" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uso</span></a>-kae <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/uso" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uso</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/woodcarving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>woodcarving</span></a></p>
Asakiyume<p>More from the shrine in Dazaifu:</p><p>"The ceremony begins with participants gathering around a large wooden bullfinch in the courtyard. They then circle the bullfinch to rhythmic drumming, chanting "kaemasho kaemasho," passing the small carvings from person to person. The process is repeated a number of times.</p><p>After the ceremony ends, you can take one of the wooden birds back home with you for happiness and good fortune in the year ahead." Asakiyume<p>The Japanese word for an untruth is uso--a homonym for the name of the bullfinch (but written with a different character). But Michizane was honest and upright, not a liar! And the birds are his messengers. The shrine to him in Dazaifu says in its English-language page, <br>"as Sugawara Michizane was esteemed for his sincere, honest nature, the exchange of these wooden carvings symbolizes exchanging your untruths for the blessings of the deity." </p><p><a href="https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/en/art-and-events/events/usokae-festival/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/en/art-a</span><span class="invisible">nd-events/events/usokae-festival/</span></a><br>(3/x)</p><p><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Japan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Japan</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/traditions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>traditions</span></a></p>

Gemma Sarracenia<p>I would have thought of her every time I ate it. Now there's nothing to remember to make. It would have been the mark she left on our traditions. I have nothing here to remember her by, and because of that, this is the first holiday I've thought about her on for a couple of years. That's fucking awful.
