Ishambard<p>Hot off the press for <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> unlocks.</p><p>I am a little early in terms of the Star Wars stuff. But I am hoping to do a recording for each of the Super Star Wars games.</p><p>I NEVER want to do this ever again...<br>Let it be known that Super Empire Strikes Back is brutal and cruel.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SNES" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SNES</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/StarWars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StarWars</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, I have been rather quiet as of late, mostly due to home stuff, sorting out a bedroom and lots of old things, breaking down a wardrobe, planting new plants, etc.</p><p>But, I have also been plugging away at Mercenaries Playground of Destruction for <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/PS2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PS2</span></a> and I will aim to put something together for this in the coming days, hopefully by mid-week, depending on how much time I get to write, etc.</p><p>But part of the reason why I was so determined to work through this game...</p><p>I hit the 100 Masteries milestone. So that is 100 games with all achievements. Now, admittedly, nearly a third of those are Mickey Mouse games. But I am so glad that Mercenaries will forever be on my record as the 100th game I mastered.<br>At some point, I will go back to Driver and get rid of that softcore completion, and hopefully convert that into a mastery.</p><p>But for the time being, I can rest well knowing I nabbed that $100,000,000 bounty and stopped some nuclear missiles.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>Why am I like this?</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, Kingsley's Adventure for <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/PS1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PS1</span></a> is a good example of picking a game to play on a whim. I saw the thumbnail, title screen, and a screenshot and I knew I had to play it.<br>It has a fox with a sword! How could I say no?!</p><p>Playing as Kingsley the fox, we are saving the fruit kingdom from Bad Custard, who has stolen the book of magic from the castle.</p><p>The game has a lot of charm. From the character models to the environment design, the music. All these things set you up for a good time... Until you start wrestling with the controls. Tanky control in a platformer is a choice I don't agree with. The jumping at times will be your biggest hurdle as it can be difficult to gauge distances.</p><p>If the controls don't turn you off, the game itself is a decent little jaunt. It's under baked in places, combat is basic, villages are populated by devoid of additional content besides finding the right person to talk to.</p><p>It wasn't a bad way to spend my Sunday.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/PlayStation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PlayStation</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>Whilst I gave the Mario Kart Double Dash staff ghosts a lot of hate, and they deserve it, doing the Time Trial Achievements for Mario Kart DS was a much weirder experience.</p><p>The short tracks proved to be a lot harder, with Yoshi Falls taking me a good FOUR attempt. Donut Plains was also similar.<br>This is in contrast to the near hours I had to put into Daisy Cruiser on Double Dash.</p><p>Heck on DK Pass, I actually hit one of the giant snowballs and still beat the target time.</p><p>So here's the thing. DS wants to use certain characters and certain karts, which is fine. Varies up the gameplay.</p><p>But below is an example from Waluigi Pinball. I feel I shouldn't be beating the target time by nearly 10 seconds.<br>I mean, DS does put you through the hell of Triple Star ranking every cup on every CC, so the time trials were a nice break from that.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/MarioKart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MarioKart</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/MarioKartDS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MarioKartDS</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Nintendo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nintendo</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, my suffering with Fantasia on <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaGenesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaGenesis</span></a> was actually quite short-lived. Much like the film, this is quite an experience. But this one is more similar to a bad trip to the dentist than a treat for the senses.</p><p>It all plays a bit like a rage game like "I Wanna Be The Guy." Each death means you have learnt something, hopefully, like how that newly spawned enemy moves, or how that platform reacts when you jump on it, or that collecting that item spawns items, enemies or platforms... Or sometimes all three!</p><p>After a while, the game is consistently inconsistent and predictably unpredictable.</p><p>Your first completion will be an incoherent stream of profanity, and if you feel like doing it a second time, you'll possibly find it more of a breeze. Unless you play on hard, but I don't recommend that as the damage boost on some enemies is just spiteful.</p><p>Just remember to press and hold the down button to make sure you bounce and damage/defeat enemies. </p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Sega" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sega</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, one thing I am enjoying about my RetroAchievements adventures is finding things I end up having a really good time with.</p><p>Land of Illusion for <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaMasterSystem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaMasterSystem</span></a> and <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/GameGear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GameGear</span></a> is a fantastic example of this.</p><p>When I started it, I was immediately caught off guard by you fact the game had a world map, one that you can traverse and revisit previous levels, allowing you to go back later with some additional skills to find hidden treasures.</p><p>I make it sound like a sprawling epic. It's not. The stages are pretty short and the game itself is probably only a couple of hours in length at most. But it is a good couple of hours as you adventure around saving you friends and defeating the evil Phantom in the clouds! (Who isn't Pete!)</p><p>Either the Master System or Game Gear version are worth a play as they are essentially the same game.</p><p>If I am going to be honest, it seems like all the retro Illusion games are worth playing!</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Sega" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sega</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>I know, and I'm sorry 😭</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, let's play something British for a change. </p><p>Something that I vaguely remember from my childhood is the series <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/JamesPond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>JamesPond</span></a> not to be confused with British entertainment staple, James Bond. This is a fish who is a secret agent!</p><p>And today, we're looking at Super James Pond. If it didn't have the super prefix, we wouldn't know it was <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SNES" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SNES</span></a> game. This game is actually James Pond 2 RoboCod and is available on... Pretty much every system going.</p><p>It is also a fever dream of a game, the backgrounds and environments are a little nonsensical and bizarre. It's not a bad game, but maybe a little visually crowded in some places. Otherwise, it is a rather standard platformer with an odd gimmick of your hero being infinitely vertically stretchy. </p><p>Did I mention it is also a Christmas game? We're on a mission to save Santa! I should have waited till December to play this...</p><p>Playing British was a mistake...</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SuperNintendo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SuperNintendo</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Nintendo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nintendo</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>Like every 90's child, I had a dinosaur phase that was probably perpetuated by Jurassic Park. A film that a child of 4 or 5 had no right to watch even with parental guidance.</p><p>Whilst i don't remember my dinosaur phase, I DO remember having Jurassic Park in the <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Gameboy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gameboy</span></a> and never beating. Well, last night, life found a way.</p><p>This game is very cruel. The first two levels are actually the hardest in terms of difficulty with the Triceratops stampede where it is easy to hemorrhage lives and a T-Rex "fight" where if you didn't pick up all the ammo pick ups, accidentally waste your special ammo, and use a continue is impossible to beat.</p><p>It's no wonder child me never beat this.<br>Feels good to get a Mastery on this, even if I had to grind out a high score and also end the game with 9 lives for two achievements</p><p>I feel I need to play the 16-bit games, as I do remember playing those, especially the Genesis ones. I'll add that time my ever growing list.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Nintendo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nintendo</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>No, that isn’t stage 3004, but actually, stage 3-O-04</p><p>Chu Chu Rocket on the <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/GBA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GBA</span></a> has 2,500 extra puzzles from Japanese, Europe, and US servers. These are divided into 4 packs of 25 sets of 25 puzzles.</p><p>Designated with a number between 1-4, letter between A-Y, and then a number between 1-25.</p><p>So stage 3O-04 would be like... Puzzle 1,604 out of 2,500.</p><p>So, I'm slowly getting there. As mentioned previously, the European server sets seem to have more stages that are simpler than the Japanese servers. This doesn't mean there haven't been some absolutely sods of European puzzles, but some sets I have managed to blitz through or have provided, potentially unintended solutions, which makes the stages quite straightforward.</p><p>Still, it will probably take me up to the end of this week to finish off the last 900 puzzles.</p><p>Then, I will be free of this adorable Mouse mayhem.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/GameBoyAdvance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GameBoyAdvance</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Sega" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sega</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>And it is done.</p><p>I ripped and teared until there was nothing left to tear.</p><p>I suppose there is still the 32x Sigil hack I could play.<br>But for the time being, I have mastered every <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/DOOM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DOOM</span></a> game on <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> </p><p>That was a good break, but I guess I should go back to the Mickey Mouse games now...</p>
Ishambard<p>Rip and tear.<br>Until it is done.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/DOOM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DOOM</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Doom64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Doom64</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, all being well and good, I aim to have <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Doom64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Doom64</span></a> knocked out tonight. I have about 8 stages to clear on Watch Me Die, which should be manageable.</p><p>But then I look at my <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/DOOM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DOOM</span></a> clears.</p><p>3DO, 32X, and Atari Jaguar DOOM are beaten, not mastered. The first two should be pretty manageable. Though 100% kills, secrets AND items is a little annoying for the 32X version. Graciously, there are only 15 stages.</p><p>But Atari Jaguar DOOM is a misery to play when you consider <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> All emulators for it have some kind of issue. Bizhawk works "best," but it feels like you are playing using Fast Monsters, and your fire rate seems to be half what you are used to. It's why it took me 6 months to get through... Though I did elect additional suffering with grabbing as many pistol starts as I could...</p><p>If I can master SNES DOOM, I should be able to do this!</p>
Ishambard<p>Considering I talk about this quite a lot.</p><p>I figured I should have a pinned post that links to my <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> profile.</p><p>That way, people can see what I am currently playing, what I have beaten, and what I have gotten 100% achievements on.</p><p>I'm happy to talk about anything I have played or am currently playing or give advice on games.<br>In fact, i am just happy to talk games with people 😂</p><p><a href="https://retroachievements.org/user/Ishambard" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">retroachievements.org/user/Ish</span><span class="invisible">ambard</span></a></p><p>Comms are pretty open, so feel free to get in contact.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/VideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGames</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a></p>

Ishambard<p>So, just an observation for the Mario Kart DS <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> </p><p>The time trial achievements are VERY generous so far, which is a relief having done the Double Dash time trial achievements.</p><p>To put it into context. Luigi Circuit on Double Dash asks for a time of 1:26:277 whilst the same track on DS is 1:36:939.</p><p>Sure, the games play differently, Double Dash is a faster game than Mario Kart DS, but a time difference is over 10 seconds.</p><p>Double Dash asks for near perfectly driving, whilst the last time trial I did on DS was Delfino Square, and I kept messing up the off-road shortcut, but still managed to come in about 3 seconds under the target time.</p><p>There is still plenty of time for me to get angry at this <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/MarioKart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MarioKart</span></a>, so fear not.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/NintendoDS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NintendoDS</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/MarioKartDS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MarioKartDS</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, I am starting off 2025 correctly. </p><p>A game I never finished as a child was Wonder Boy in Monster World for the <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaGenesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaGenesis</span></a>. I played this game quite a lot, but the copy I played had a pretty much complete save file, so I never really experienced the adventure as a whole. I did challenge the final boss, but I could never beat them, and I can confirm that the final boss is pretty brutal!</p><p>Overall, the game is shorter than I expected, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, brevity is a good thing in an adventure game. Dying part way through a dungeon and having to redo the section can be a little frustrating, but usually, not a huge amount of progress is ever lost.</p><p>A great 2D action platformer with some MetroidVania aspects. I'm so glad that I can add this to my list of completed games.</p><p>I do love how the cover art for this game features the hero, Shion, in trainers and a radical headband!</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Sega" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sega</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaMegaDrive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaMegaDrive</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/WonderBoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WonderBoy</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, probably much to my wife's frustration, I have been ploughing through the backlog until festivities will mean I will have to play host for a few days.</p><p>I have no idea how I stumbled on Arkista's Ring on the <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/NES" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NES</span></a>, but I don't regret giving this a try.</p><p>From images, it looks like a Zelda Clone. But it isn't really. The game it split into 31 stages, which are 24 x 16 squares each. Your goal is to kill enemies with your bow, get upgrades, find a key, and progress through on your merry way. After you beat the final boss, the Shogun, the game loops another 3 times until you clear 124 stages and get your actual ending. With each loop, enemies move faster, making each loop much harder.</p><p>A full 4 loops of the game probably takes about 2 hours, and I must admit, I was amazed i managed a 1 continue clear here! It was honestly quite a fun time. Only a few stages prove frustrating, like the penultimate stage on each run with all those Ninja. </p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Nintendo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nintendo</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a></p>
Ishambard<p>So, I forgot to mention there was another game I had beaten from my childhood recently.</p><p>Granada on the <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaGenesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaGenesis</span></a></p><p>This was an odd game, one I played at a friends. In fact, 90% of all Genesis games from my childhood were played at that particular friend's. I didn't inherit a Genesis until my early teens, and we left it at my Nan's to be played when we would stay there overnight.</p><p>Granada was one of those games that was a faint memory for me. Coming back to it, it is no wonder I didn't finish it as a kid.<br>The game is challenging, and the screen can fill up with bullets and enemies quite quickly. Thankfully, you can take a decent number of hits before you lose a life, and you can give yourself six lives per continue. With 3 continues, it is beatable under those conditions, but if you want a 1 continue clear, well, you are in for one Heck of a challenge!</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Sega" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sega</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SegaMegaDrive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SegaMegaDrive</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/RetroAchievements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroAchievements</span></a></p>
