The #hackerspace was itself the best project. It still is.

Sewing rooms, plural. Woodworking, CNC, auto body, and bike mechanics shops. Fab labs for 3D printers, laser cutters, and 3-axis milling machines. We converted the warehouse's elevated supervisor booth into a treehouse lounge, one of several. A vending machine that runs on the honor system. _Working bathrooms._ Industrial-scale particulate filters. Safety training.

And in the beating heart of it all: the electronics lab.

I recently visited i3 Detroit on a lark to see how they're doing. It was bittersweet; seeing a #hackerspace get so large and successful was a joy. But now its maintenance needs outpace the capacity of volunteer labor. Large overhaul projects are stalling midway through; I saw people burning out.

So what is the most Discord- or Slack-like thing that one can self-host for a Hacker Club?

edit: an idea of requirements...

I guess I need it to have an easy web page front end so rank beginners will know how to use it; I'll give up as much fancy functionality as I need to for that.

Also needs to be self-hosted with no surveillance or shitty commercial license or capitalist issues. Again, I will give up as much fancy functionality as I have to.

From there, I'd like to have as much Nice Stuff as possible, groups, spaces for admin, different topics, etc.

Thinking Matrix via a web frontend? Not sure about the licensing/beholdenness of Matrix.

@sheddi @pluralistic @frameworkcomputer @iFixit Meanwhile, if a larger #hackerspace can recruit enough mechanics and electricians (and a couple engineers, if they're not already members) and partner with a suitably equipped garage, there could be a similar market for replacing computerized automotive electronics. Perhaps this would be best paired with an existing #EV retrofit business.

But the appliance retrofitting would have a much lower capital startup cost. Perhaps automotive electronics retrofits could be a sequel to the appliances, seeded with proceeds from those.

@ooguz Build a tool to circumvent censorship during protests over legacy comm's such as #SMS, #lora, #radio and Dial-up. He published software today. So if anyone want to help him develop this idea further please give him a hand. Dialup used to be a backbone service for many protests since 2010 in east and making it more accessible is valuable.

@revspace @hsnl Update: We went, it was great, we spent a good couple of hours and are thinking up projects and plan to join and go back.
Everyone was very friendly, even the VAX 11/750!
It’s rewarding to have people model in a friendly way, “this is hard; I don’t quite know what will work but I’m experimenting (carefully, safely) and it’s fun even if it doesn’t work yet.”
