Rita Singer<p>📢 NEW ARTICLE 📢</p><p>SHOSHI MUKHI DASS (1868 - 1921), missionary, teacher and nurse</p><p>'In Glasgow, she was actively involved with the Welsh National Union while further south, in Wales, she delivered several public lectures to Methodist audiences. Wearing a sari to demonstrate the typical dress of women in north-east India, she spoke in English about the history and culture of her country, her education and missionary work, and sang hymns in Bangla. During her second year in Britain, she frequently lectured together with Kate E. Williams, Pwllheli, to crowded audiences. These appearances were part of the qualification process for outgoing missionaries to India for the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church. Shoshi had been accepted by the General Assembly at Bootle by May 1893.' -- Rita Singer</p><p>Read the full story here: <a href="https://biography.wales/article/s15-DASS-MUK-1868" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">biography.wales/article/s15-DA</span><span class="invisible">SS-MUK-1868</span></a></p><p>Image: <a href="https://flic.kr/p/CUGosM" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flic.kr/p/CUGosM</span><span class="invisible"></span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Bywgraffiadur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bywgraffiadur</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/DiversityProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiversityProject</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Wales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wales</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/India" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>India</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Bangladesh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bangladesh</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/HistoryOfReligion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryOfReligion</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Mission" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mission</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/histodons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodons</span></a></p>
Rita Singer<p>JONATHAN CEREDIG DAVIES (d.1932), traveller, genealogist, and folk-lorist, was born <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> 1859.<br>'At the age of 16, in 1875, Davies went to the newly-founded Welsh colony in Patagonia. He returned to Wales in 1891 [and in 1892 was editor of Yr Athrofa, in which ' Anturiaethau yn Nhir y Cewri,' which was published in English as Adventures in the Land of Giants, appeared as a serial]. In 1898 he visited western Australia, where he spent four years. In both countries he made a study of the native populations, but also did much to further the spiritual and cultural movements among the English and Welsh colonists. On his return, apart from a brief visit to western Australia in 1907 and a visit to Spain and France in 1924, he spent the remaining years of his life in Wales, devoting himself entirely to the study of Welsh history, folk-lore, and genealogy.' -- William Williams<br><a href="https://biography.wales/article/s-DAVI-CER-1859" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">biography.wales/article/s-DAVI</span><span class="invisible">-CER-1859</span></a><br>Darlun/Image: <a href="https://archive.org/details/cu31924029911298/page/n11/mode/2up" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">archive.org/details/cu31924029</span><span class="invisible">911298/page/n11/mode/2up</span></a> <br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Folklore</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Wales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wales</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Bywgraffiadur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bywgraffiadur</span></a></p>
